Pay for eSIM with OXXO Mexico 2026 — activate in 15 min, invoice

Pay your eSIM in cash at OXXO Mexico 2026: generate code, pay in store, activate in 15 min. CFDI invoice, Telcel network, from $3–$8 for 3 GB

·13 min read·by eSIM Ahora Team

Yes, you can pay for your eSIM with cash at OXXO in Mexico. At eSIM Ahora we accept this method because we know not all travelers carry an active international card, and many residents prefer cash for online purchases. The process takes 3 steps: you generate a payment code on our platform, go to any OXXO with the code and cash, and the system activates your plan automatically when OXXO confirms the payment — all in under 15 minutes if the store has an online system.

How OXXO payment works step by step

The OXXO payment flow is different from card payment: OXXO Pay (the gateway we use) issues a barcode that the cashier scans, and the banking system notifies the purchase in real time.

Step 1 — generate the payment code: Go to plans for Mexico, select the package you need (typical ranges: $3–$8 for 3 GB in May 2026, check current prices on the page), and at the payment screen choose OXXO Pay. The platform generates a PDF with barcode + 14-digit alphanumeric reference. Download the PDF or take a screenshot — you'll need it at the store.

Step 2 — pay in store: Go to any OXXO in Mexico (over 22,000 stores nationwide, according to FEMSA 2025). Show the barcode to the cashier; they scan it, you pay in cash, and receive a ticket with confirmation stamp. OXXO charges 10 MXN commission per transaction (fixed amount, independent of your plan's value).

Step 3 — wait for activation: When OXXO notifies the payment (usually in 5–15 minutes if the system is online, up to 24 hours if there's a network delay), you receive an email with your eSIM activation QR. You scan the code from Settings > Cellular > Add eSIM on iOS, or Settings > Network & Internet > eSIM on Android, and the profile downloads. Your eSIM is ready to use as soon as you arrive in Mexico or land (if you purchased from abroad).

Why use OXXO instead of a card

International debit/credit card is faster (instant activation), but OXXO solves 3 specific cases:

1. You don't have an internationally accepted card. Many Mexican debit cards issued by regional banks don't have USD purchases enabled or are rejected by 3D Secure gateways. OXXO removes that friction: you pay in pesos, in cash.

2. You prefer not to expose banking data online. With OXXO you don't enter a CVV or card number into any web form. The only personal data you share with us is your email (to receive the QR); payment happens offline.

3. You need an invoice with RFC but don't have a card in your name. At eSIM Ahora we issue CFDI 4.0 tax invoice with the RFC you indicate at checkout, regardless of payment method. If you're self-employed or a business and your accountant asks for a receipt to deduct the expense, OXXO allows it just like card — the invoice is generated against the OXXO ticket folio.

How long OXXO payment takes to appear

Confirmation time depends on OXXO infrastructure and your bank:

  • Typical scenario (80% of cases): 5–15 minutes. You pay at OXXO, the cashier closes the transaction, the banking system notifies OXXO Pay, and the gateway alerts us. You receive the email with the QR before leaving the store.
  • Slow scenario (15% of cases): 1–4 hours. If the store has connectivity issues or the bank processes in batch (happens in rural branches), the webhook arrives with delay.
  • Edge scenario (5% of cases): up to 24 hours. FEMSA reports that 0.3% of OXXO payments confirm the next day due to network outages. If after 24 hours you haven't received the QR, contact us by email or Telegram — we review the ticket folio and activate manually.

Tip: if you need the eSIM for a flight leaving in under 6 hours, use a card. OXXO is reliable but not instant.

Comparison with other eSIM payment methods in Mexico

In Mexico, travel eSIM platforms accept combinations of card, OXXO, SPEI, and (some) international transfer. Here's how we compare:

Method eSIM Ahora Airalo Holafly
Card (Visa/MC/Amex) ✅ Instant ✅ Instant ✅ Instant
OXXO Pay ✅ 5–15 min typical ❌ Not available ❌ Not available
SPEI (MX transfer) ✅ Up to 24 h ❌ Not available ❌ Not available
PayPal ❌ We don't accept ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
CFDI 4.0 Invoice ✅ Automatic ❌ Not issued ❌ Not issued

Airalo and Holafly prioritize international card because their main market is European/Asian travelers. We add OXXO and SPEI because 40% of our users are Mexico residents traveling within the country (Cancún, Mexico City, Guadalajara) or to Latin America, and many prefer cash.

Note on commissions: OXXO charges 10 MXN per transaction (May 2026); we don't add markup to the plan — you pay the same as with card plus the 10 MXN from OXXO. Holafly charges $19 USD for 5 days in Mexico (as of May 2026) with FUP throttling at 5 GB; our range is lower — check current plans for Mexico.

What you need to pay at OXXO

  • Barcode or alphanumeric reference. Our platform generates this in the payment PDF.
  • Cash in Mexican pesos. OXXO doesn't accept USD or card at the counter for code payments (cash only).
  • Official ID (optional). Some cashiers ask for it on purchases over 3,000 MXN; for eSIM (typically 100–300 MXN) it's not common.
  • Confirmation ticket. The cashier gives you one; keep it until you receive the QR by email — it's your proof of payment.

OXXO vs SPEI — which is better

Both are Mexican peso payments without an international card. The difference:

OXXO:

  • You pay in cash at a physical store.
  • Fixed commission: 10 MXN.
  • Typical confirmation: 5–15 minutes (up to 24 h in edge cases).
  • Best if: you don't have a digital bank account, prefer cash, or live near an OXXO.

SPEI:

  • Electronic transfer from your bank (mobile app or web).
  • No commission at most Mexican banks (BBVA, Santander, Banorte charge 0 MXN for outgoing SPEI).
  • Confirmation: 10 minutes to 24 hours (banks process SPEI in time windows).
  • Best if: you use online banking, want to skip the OXXO trip, or buy outside store hours.

At eSIM Ahora we accept both — choose what's convenient. Both generate CFDI 4.0 invoice just like card.

eSIM coverage in Mexico — which network we use

Once you pay (OXXO, card, or SPEI) and activate your eSIM, you connect to Telcel network (América Móvil). Telcel covers 99% of Mexico's paved highways and 96% of the population, according to IFT (Federal Institute of Telecommunications, 2025) data.

Typical speeds:

  • Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey: 20–80 Mbps on 4G LTE, peaks of 150 Mbps in 5G zones (Telcel launched 5G in 120 cities in 2024–2025).
  • Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Los Cabos: 15–40 Mbps, solid coverage in hotels and tourist areas.
  • Rural highways (Oaxaca, Chiapas interior): 2–10 Mbps on 3G/4G, intermittent coverage in mountainous stretches.

We don't apply FUP throttling (Fair Use Policy) until you consume 100% of your package. If you buy 3 GB, you get 3 GB at full speed; after that it cuts off (no reduction to 128 kbps like some carriers).

eSIM-compatible devices — verify before buying

Before you pay at OXXO, confirm your phone supports eSIM. Not all models sold in Mexico have the feature enabled, even if the hardware includes it (some carriers disable eSIM by contract).

Compatible iPhones (iOS 12.1 and up):

  • iPhone XS, XS Max, XR (2018) and newer.
  • iPhone SE 2020, SE 2022.
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 (all models).

Popular Androids in Mexico (partial list):

  • Samsung Galaxy S20/S21/S22/S23/S24, Z Flip/Fold 3/4/5.
  • Google Pixel 3a/4/5/6/7/8 (purchased in US or unlocked; some sold by Telcel have eSIM blocked).
  • Motorola Edge 40/50, Razr 2023.

How to verify: On iPhone: Settings > General > About > if you see Digital IMEI or EID, you have eSIM. On Android: Settings > About Phone > search for EID (32-digit code).

If your phone doesn't have eSIM, you'll need a physical SIM — check Telcel prepaid or AT&T Mexico at physical stores (outside this post's scope; we only sell eSIM).

Invoicing — RFC, CFDI 4.0, and deduction for self-employed

One of eSIM Ahora's differentiators in Mexico is automatic invoice with RFC. At checkout (before generating the OXXO code), you enter:

  • RFC (13 characters for individuals, 12 for businesses).
  • Business name (your full name or company name).
  • Tax postal code.
  • Tax regime (optional, improves SAT validation).

When OXXO confirms the payment, the system generates the CFDI 4.0 invoice in under 1 hour and sends it to your email plus uploads it to your account. The XML meets SAT (Tax Administration Service) requirements for expense deduction.

Is eSIM expense deductible? Yes, if you're self-employed with business activity or a company that needs connectivity for business trips. SAT classifies mobile telephony under code 84111506 (Cellular telecommunications services). Your accountant can deduct 100% of VAT if the expense is tied to your activity (for example, eSIM to visit a client in Monterrey, attend a trade show in Mexico City, etc.).

If you pay at OXXO and need a corrected invoice (because you entered the RFC wrong), contact us at support@esimahora.com with the ticket folio — we issue the correction in under 48 hours (internal policy; SAT allows corrections up to 30 days after).

Alternatives to OXXO — other affiliated retailers

OXXO Pay also works at:

  • 7-Eleven Mexico (over 2,000 stores).
  • Farmacia del Ahorro, Farmacias Benavides (national chains).
  • Walmart, Bodega Aurrerá (select service desks).
  • Soriana, Chedraui stores (some locations).

The barcode is the same; go to any of these retailers, they scan, you pay, done. In rural areas where there's no OXXO but there's an affiliated 7-Eleven or pharmacy, this option saves the day.

What to do if payment doesn't confirm in 24 hours

If more than 24 hours have passed since you paid at OXXO and haven't received the QR email:

  1. Check spam/promotions. Gmail sometimes flags emails with attachments (the QR) as promotional.
  2. Verify the OXXO ticket. Confirm the status is PAID and the amount matches your order.
  3. Contact us by email (support@esimahora.com) or Telegram (@esimahora_soporte). Include:
    • Order number (you received it when generating the OXXO code).
    • Photo of OXXO ticket (folio and date visible).
    • Email you used at checkout.

We review the OXXO Pay webhook, and if payment is confirmed in their system but didn't reach our platform (integration bug, very rare but happens), we activate the plan manually and send you the QR in under 4 hours.

Final tips before buying

1. Buy with time to spare. If your flight leaves in 2 hours, use a card. OXXO is for purchases ≥6 hours before departure (comfortable margin covering 95% of cases).

2. Download the PDF before going to OXXO. Don't rely on mobile data in the store — many OXXO locations have weak public Wi-Fi. Keep the PDF saved on your phone or printed.

3. Keep the ticket. It's your only physical proof until you receive the QR. If you lose it and there's a dispute, the bank takes 15 days to issue a certified copy.

4. Activate your eSIM before traveling (optional but recommended). You can scan the QR from home/hotel and leave the profile installed but inactive until you arrive in Mexico. This avoids connectivity issues at the airport.

5. If you need more data, reload from the app. Our platform allows in-flight reloads: you buy 3 GB, use it in 5 days, and reload another 3 GB without changing your eSIM. Reloads also pay with OXXO (same process).

FAQ

How long does the eSIM take to activate after paying at OXXO?

Typical time is 5–15 minutes if the OXXO store has an online system running. In 80% of cases, you receive the QR email before leaving the store. In slow cases (network issues, rural stores), it can take up to 24 hours. If after 24 hours you haven't received the QR, contact us with the ticket folio for manual activation.

Can I pay for an eSIM with OXXO if I'm outside Mexico?

No. OXXO Pay only accepts payments at physical stores in Mexico. If you're abroad (for example, buying the eSIM before your trip), use an international credit/debit card. Once in Mexico, you can reload or buy additional plans by paying at OXXO.

Does the OXXO code have an expiration date?

Yes. The payment code generated by OXXO Pay expires in 7 days (168 hours) from when you create it. If you don't pay within that window, the code becomes invalid and you must generate a new one (your original order cancels automatically, no charge).

Does OXXO charge a commission for payment?

Yes. OXXO charges 10 MXN commission per transaction (fixed amount as of May 2026), independent of your plan's value. OXXO retains this charge; the eSIM provider doesn't receive that portion and doesn't add markup to the plan for choosing OXXO — you pay the same as with card plus the 10 MXN commission.

Do I need to print the code or can I show it on my phone?

You can show it on screen. The cashier scans the barcode directly from your phone. Make sure screen brightness is high and the code image is sharp — if the optical reader can't read it, the cashier can manually enter the 14-digit alphanumeric reference.

What if I pay at OXXO but never receive the activation QR?

First, wait 24 full hours (95% of payments confirm sooner, but some banks process in nightly batches). Then check your email spam/promotions folder. If after 24 hours there's no QR, contact us by email (support@esimahora.com) or Telegram with the order number and photo of the OXXO ticket — we activate manually in under 4 hours.
