Turkey has three main carriers: Turkcell (best nationwide coverage, including rural Anatolia and the Aegean coast), Vodafone Türkiye (5G in Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Bodrum), and Türk Telekom (state-owned subsidiary, strong in eastern Turkey). The eSIM Ahora connects to the strongest available network. Plugs are Type C and F (same as Spain and Italy), 220V. IMPORTANT: if your physical phone connects to Turkish networks for more than 120 days, Turkey blocks the IMEI and requires registration (~$25-50). The eSIM avoids this because the device appears as a visitor.
Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen offer 1 hour free WiFi after passport registration. The currency is the Turkish lira (TRY); volatility is high — pay by card when possible (Visa/Mastercard at Ziraat Bankası, Garanti BBVA, İş Bankası ATMs). In Cappadocia hot air balloons fly at 200-600m altitude and keep Turkcell coverage — perfect for live photos. The Istanbul Metro has 4G at all stations. For Bosphorus ferries and boats to the Princes' Islands, coverage is full.
Istanbul is pleasant in April-May and September-October. Summer is sweltering (July-August) on the Mediterranean coast but ideal for beach time in Bodrum or Antalya. Cappadocia is best in spring and fall — hot air balloons fly more often with gentle winds. Winter brings snow to Istanbul (rare but it happens) and sub-zero temperatures in central Anatolia. Pamukkale and Ephesus are visitable year-round, but midday summer heat exhausts you.
Turkcell, Vodafone Türkiye, and Türk Telekom cover major cities and tourist coasts well. Istanbul has 5G in many zones. The Istanbul Metro (modern M2, M5 lines) has coverage; older lines don't. Cappadocia and eastern mountain regions: 3G/4G enough for messaging but not streaming. The Lake Van region and Syrian border may have limited signal.
Turkey uses Type C/F plugs (230V, 50Hz). The Turkish lira is highly volatile — only withdraw what you'll spend and prefer card payments. Bargaining is expected in bazaars like the Grand Bazaar; start at 30-40% of the asking price. Tips are 5-10%. Watch out for airport currency exchange! Rates can be 20-30% worse than at downtown exchange offices.
Turkish SIMs for foreigners come with an important restriction: if your phone doesn't register with authorities within 120 days, it gets blocked. Not an issue for short visits, but the eSIM avoids the risk entirely — it uses a foreign ICCID and doesn't tie to your device IMEI. For a week in Istanbul + 4 days in Cappadocia, 8-10 GB suffices.
