Mobile networks in South Korea

South Korea has three carriers: SK Telecom (largest market share, 5G leader), KT (Korea Telecom, formerly Korea Telegraph & Telephone), and LG U+. All three have nationwide 5G — Korea leads the world in mobile speed with peaks of 500-1000 Mbps. The eSIM Ahora connects to the strongest network. Plugs are Type C and F (standard European, same as Spain and Germany), 220V. Important: iPhones sold in Korea are unlocked (unlike Japan), so the eSIM works as an additional line without complications.

Travel tips for South Korea

Seoul Incheon (ICN) and Gimpo (GMP) airports offer fast unlimited free WiFi. The currency is the South Korean won (KRW); use KB Kookmin Bank, Shinhan Bank, or Woori Bank ATMs with foreign cards (some only accept Plus/Maestro, not Cirrus). Tipping is NOT tradition in Korea — can be seen as rejection. For transport use the T-money card (rechargeable at any 7-Eleven, works on metro/bus/taxis). KakaoMap beats Google Maps in Korea (Google has limitations due to South Korean mapping laws). KakaoTalk replaces WhatsApp in local communication.

Frequently asked questions about South Korea eSIM

Does the eSIM work on the KTX (bullet train), Seoul metro, and rural areas?
Yes. KTX (Korea Train Express) Seoul-Busan (2h 18min, 305 km/h) has 5G throughout. The Seoul Metro (10 lines) has 4G/5G at EVERY station and tunnel — Korea pioneered underground coverage. Rural areas (deep Jeolla, Gangwon mountains) have stable 4G. For hiking at Hallasan (Jeju) or Bukhansan (Seoul) coverage reaches main summits.
Does the eSIM cover Jeju Island, DMZ, and tourist excursions?
Yes. Jeju Island ("Korea's Hawaii") has full coverage from SK Telecom, KT, and LG U+ — Jeju City, Seogwipo, Hallasan (volcano), Manjanggul (lava caves). The DMZ (demilitarized zone with North Korea) has Korean coverage up to the JSA (Joint Security Area, Panmunjom). DMZ tours are organized with official guides — coverage drops crossing to neutral zone but returns in Korean territory. Cameras are restricted in parts of the DMZ.
Does the eSIM work crossing to Japan, China, or sailing to Taiwan?
No. Our South Korea eSIM only works in Korean territory. Short flights Seoul-Tokyo (2h), Seoul-Beijing (2h), or Seoul-Taipei (2.5h) end your eSIM on landing. For East Asia multi-country loops consider our regional Asia eSIM or one per country. Busan-Fukuoka (Japan) ferries cross the Korea Strait — signal drops mid-route.
