Mobile networks in China mainland

China has three state carriers: China Mobile (largest nationwide coverage, world's largest by subscribers), China Unicom (broad 5G in coastal zones), and China Telecom (5G in major cities). The eSIM Ahora connects via international gateway — key: your traffic routes outside China, which typically allows Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook (blocked by the Great Firewall for local Chinese SIMs). Plugs are mixed Types A, C, and I, 220V — bring a universal adapter. 4G/5G coverage reaches Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chengdu, Xi'an, and the high-speed train network.

Travel tips for China mainland

Beijing Capital (PEK), Shanghai Pudong (PVG), and Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) airports offer free WiFi after passport verification. The currency is the yuan/RMB (CNY); WeChat Pay and Alipay dominate — Visa/Mastercard accepted at international hotels but scarce elsewhere. Bank of China, ICBC, and ICCB ATMs accept foreign cards. Tipping is NOT tradition in mainland China (unlike Hong Kong). Western apps (Google Maps, Uber, Spotify, YouTube) are blocked on local Chinese networks — our eSIM with international gateway typically unblocks them without VPN. Download WeChat before traveling — it's essential for everything.

Frequently asked questions about China mainland eSIM

Does the eSIM allow access to Google, WhatsApp, and Facebook in China?
Typically yes. The key difference between our eSIM and a local Chinese SIM: our traffic routes via international gateway outside the Great Firewall, allowing access to Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X/Twitter, YouTube without VPN. Local Chinese SIMs are subject to national filtering. Important: performance may be slower than a local SIM because data travels further, but services work.
Does the eSIM cover the Great Wall, Forbidden City, and remote sites?
Yes. China Mobile has 4G/5G coverage at all tourist Great Wall sections (Mutianyu, Badaling, Jinshanling, Simatai) and the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen. The Terracotta Army in Xi'an and Pandas in Chengdu too. On deeper Great Wall (Jiankou, wild sections) signal may drop — download offline maps. For Tibet, Xinjiang, and restricted zones verify pre-approved permits.
Does the eSIM work on high-speed trains (CRH) between cities?
Yes. CRH (China Railway High-speed) trains Beijing-Shanghai (4.5h, most popular), Beijing-Guangzhou, and Beijing-Xi'an have stable 4G throughout. Fuxing trains (300+ km/h) have free onboard WiFi but saturated. To coordinate with tours, hotels, or drivers, WhatsApp and WeChat work on the eSIM. Important: overnight trains to the deep west (Tibet, Xinjiang) have 30-60 min stretches without coverage.
