The UAE has two main carriers: Etisalat (the dominant network, with full nationwide 5G since 2019 — Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah) and du (broad 5G in Dubai and the Ras Laffan industrial zone). The eSIM Ahora connects to the strongest network automatically. Plugs are Type G (British, three-pin), 240V — you'll need an adapter coming from continental Europe or the Americas. On the E-11 (Sheikh Zayed) and E-66 (Dubai-Hatta) highways 5G is full.
Dubai Airport (DXB) offers fast unlimited free WiFi — one of the world's best. Abu Dhabi Airport (AUH) too. The currency is the dirham (AED, pegged at 3.67 AED/USD). Use Emirates NBD, ADCB, or Mashreq Bank ATMs — no commission on Visa/Mastercard up to 3000 AED. WhatsApp voice/video works since 2023; FaceTime and Skype still have partial restrictions — use Botim (official) as alternative. The Dubai Metro has WiFi and 5G coverage at all stations. Dress conservatively in traditional areas and at mosques.
November to March is peak season for Dubai and Abu Dhabi — 25-28°C, ideal for beach and desert. April-May and October are tolerable. June-September is brutal: 45°C+ with 70% humidity, everything moves indoors. Ramadan (varies by lunar calendar) shifts rhythms: many restaurants only open at sunset, a quieter daytime mood. Shopping season (January) brings discounts at the big malls.
Etisalat and du provide near-total 5G across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. The Dubai Metro has free Wi-Fi and mobile signal. In the desert (Liwa, Empty Quarter) coverage falls to 3G or disappears. Islands like Sir Bani Yas have hotel Wi-Fi but limited mobile signal. The E-11 (Sheikh Zayed) and E-66 (Dubai-Hatta) highways maintain 4G/5G the whole way.
The UAE uses Type G plugs (240V, 50Hz) — the British three-pin format. You'll need an adapter coming from continental Europe. The currency is the dirham (AED). Alcohol is only available at licensed hotels and bars — buying at supermarkets requires a special license. Tips are 10-15% at restaurants (sometimes already included as "service charge"). Dress codes: shoulders and knees covered at mosques and traditional areas.
Etisalat and du sell physical SIMs at the airport but require biometric registration since 2022 — slower than before. The eSIM avoids that step. For a week in Dubai with heavy use (Uber/Careem, Google Maps in new zones), 10-15 GB covers comfortably. If you're heading to the desert, download offline maps — GPS still works without data.
