Travel tips for Oman

Fly into Muscat (MCT) or Salalah (SLL); taxi to Muscat center ~10-15 OMR (~25-40 USD), shuttle cheaper. Currency Omani rial (OMR), ~0.385 OMR per USD (one of the world's most valuable currencies). Oman is pricier than neighbors: mid-range dinner 20-40 USD, mid-range hotel 120-250 USD. Frequently asked questions about Oman eSIM

Is there 5G in Muscat and Salalah?
Yes. Omantel and Ooredoo launched commercial 5G in 2020 — one of the first Gulf rollouts. Wide 5G coverage across Greater Muscat (Muttrah, Qurum, Seeb, Bawshar), Salalah, Sohar and the main highway to Sur. Typical 5G speeds 300-700 Mbps. Ongoing expansion to Nizwa and other secondary cities.
Does the eSIM work in the Wahiba Desert (Sharqiya Sands)?
Intermittent coverage. Main road to the camps has 4G; tourist Bedouin camps usually have limited or no mobile coverage — some offer slow satellite Wi-Fi. Drive with offline GPS pre-downloaded. Ideal for unplugging 1-2 nights.
Does my Omani eSIM work in Musandam (Khasab) if coming from UAE?
Yes. Although Musandam is a geographic exclave separated by UAE territory, it's still Oman and Omantel/Ooredoo cover it. If crossing by land from Dubai, make sure not to use your UAE eSIM in Omani territory (it'll charge roaming). An Oman eSIM covers main Muscat + Musandam.
