Portugal has three main carriers: MEO (Altice Portugal, best nationwide coverage including Madeira and the Azores), Vodafone Portugal (broad 5G in Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve), and NOS (best value, strong in urban areas). The eSIM Ahora connects to the strongest network. Plugs are Type F (Schuko, common) and Type C — same as Spain, so no adapter needed if coming from the Iberian Peninsula. 230V.
Lisbon, Porto, and Faro airports offer free WiFi with no time limit — one of Europe's best. The currency is the euro; Multibanco ATMs are the national network and don't charge commission to European Visa/Mastercard. If you're coming from Brazil, note that European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese differ in some everyday terms. Alfa Pendular trains (Lisbon-Porto-Faro) have onboard WiFi. The Lisbon Metro has 4G at all stations since 2023.
March-May and September-October are ideal: mild temperatures, Lisbon and Porto without tourist saturation, the Algarve still warm enough for beach. July-August: the Algarve fills with British and German visitors, prices climb 50-80%. The interior (Alentejo, Beira) is always quiet. Winter: Lisbon holds 12-15°C, rainy but mild; Porto similar but colder. Madeira is a year-round destination — eternal spring.
MEO, NOS, and Vodafone Portugal cover the mainland well with 4G/5G. The Lisbon and Porto metros have coverage. Algarve: the N125 (main road) keeps signal, but hidden beaches and coastal trails can fade. Madeira and the Azores: good coverage in populated areas, weak signal at remote viewpoints. The Alfa Pendular trains Lisbon-Porto have Wi-Fi and hold coverage along most of the route.
Portugal uses Type C/F plugs (230V, 50Hz). European Portuguese differs from Brazilian — locals appreciate the effort even if you continue in English/Spanish. Tips are 5-10%. Bacalhau appears in hundreds of variants. Pastel de nata is a daily ritual. Watch out for "couvert" — bread, butter, and olives on the table before ordering cost extra; decline with an "obrigado" if you don't want them.
A Portuguese SIM is affordable (€5-10 with basic data), but the process requires a passport. The eSIM skips the queue at Humberto Delgado airport. For a week split between Lisbon, Sintra, and a couple of days in the Algarve, 5-8 GB suffices — Portugal is a destination where you walk and look around more than at the screen.
