If you're traveling from the UK to Spain in 2026, you're probably wondering what EE will charge you for roaming. At eSIM Ahora we use Movistar's network in Spain, and in this guide we show you exactly what to expect from EE, how its post-Brexit policy works, and how much you can save with alternatives like our eSIM.

EE's roaming policy in Spain 2026

Since January 2021, free EU roaming is no longer mandatory for UK carriers. EE reintroduced roaming charges in July 2022 for contracts signed after that date. If your contract predates July 2022, you still have free roaming without extra charges in Zone 1 (which includes Spain). If your contract is newer, EE charges £2.47 per day under its Roam Abroad system.

EE divides the world into zones:

  • Zone 1: EU plus Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein (includes Spain).
  • Zone 2: USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Turkey.
  • Zone 3: Rest of world.

Spain falls in Zone 1. The £2.47/day charge activates automatically when your phone connects to the Spanish network. You pay per day of use, not per calendar day: if you land at 11 p.m. and use data, you pay £2.47; if you use data the next day, you pay another £2.47. The cycle resets every 24 hours from first connection.

What does EE's daily pass include?

With the £2.47/day pass in Spain, you get access to your UK monthly allowance:

  • Unlimited calls and SMS within Spain and to the UK.
  • Data per your UK plan (with FUP limit — see next section).
  • 4G speeds on Movistar's network (EE uses Movistar as its carrier partner in Spain).

You don't pay extra per-minute or per-SMS within that day. The charge is a flat daily fee.

FUP (Fair Use Policy) data limit on roaming

Even with the daily pass, EE applies a roaming data FUP limit based on your UK plan:

  • Smart plans (older contracts): 15 GB/month on roaming.
  • Full Works plans: 25 GB/month on roaming.
  • Max plans (5G): 75 GB/month on roaming.

If your UK plan has 100 GB/month but is a Max plan, you can only use 75 GB in Spain. If you exceed the FUP limit, EE charges £0.37/MB extra (roughly £380 per additional GB). This overage charge is prohibitive.

Unlike eSIM Ahora, which doesn't apply FUP throttling after the limit, EE cuts service or charges sky-high rates. We offer pure data plans with explicit limits (1 GB, 3 GB, 5 GB, 10 GB) that expire with no surprise charges — see plans for Spain.

EE coverage in Spain: Movistar network

EE doesn't operate its own infrastructure in Spain. It uses Movistar's network (Telefónica), Spain's carrier with the highest population coverage:

  • Movistar 4G coverage: 99.8% of Spain's population (Telefónica data, April 2026).
  • Movistar 5G coverage: 88% of population in major cities (Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Bilbao, Málaga).

EE doesn't offer 5G access on roaming in Spain under the £2.47/day pass. Your phone will connect to Movistar's 4G LTE. Typical speeds:

  • Madrid center: 40–80 Mbps download 4G.
  • Barcelona tourist zone (Gothic Quarter, Eixample): 30–70 Mbps download.
  • Costa del Sol (Marbella, Málaga): 20–50 Mbps download.
  • Rural zones (interior Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha): 5–20 Mbps download, patchy coverage.

At eSIM Ahora we also use Movistar in Spain, so coverage and speed are identical to EE's. The difference is in cost and plan flexibility.

Cost comparison: EE vs eSIM Ahora

Example of typical 7-day trip to Spain from UK:

Item EE Roaming eSIM Ahora
Base cost £2.47/day × 7 = £17.29 €2.50–€6 (1–3 GB, 30 days valid)
Data included Up to 75 GB (Max UK plan) 1 GB / 3 GB / 5 GB / 10 GB per purchase
FUP limit 15–75 GB/month per plan No throttling; depletes then stops
Overages if exceeded £0.37/MB (£380/GB) Buy another pack; no surprises
Activation Automatic on arrival Manual via QR; active in 30 seconds
Validity Per day of use 30 days from activation

If you only need 3 GB for a week in Barcelona (maps, messaging, some photos), eSIM Ahora costs around €2.50–€4, while EE charges you £17.29. Savings of ~£13 (€15). If your UK plan is Smart (15 GB FUP), EE still charges £2.47/day even if you use 500 MB.

Important: these are ballpark figures as of May 2026. For current eSIM Ahora pricing, check plans for Spain.

Use cases: when does EE make sense vs eSIM?

When EE makes sense

  • Ultra-short business trips (1–2 days): if you're in Madrid for 48 hours for meetings, £4.94 is competitive versus buying an eSIM and setting it up.
  • Older UK contracts with roaming included (pre-July 2022): if you still have free roaming from the pre-Brexit era, you pay nothing extra.
  • Need calls from a UK number: EE lets you receive calls at your UK number without forwarding. With eSIM Ahora (data-only), you'd need WhatsApp/Telegram or call forwarding setup.

When eSIM Ahora makes sense

  • Tourist trips of 5+ days: £2.47 × 10 days = £24.70. A 5 GB eSIM valid 30 days costs under €6 (£5.10).
  • Moderate to heavy data use: if you browse a lot, upload photos/videos to social media, or use offline maps, 3–5 GB covers you better than risking EE's FUP ceiling.
  • Multi-country travel: if you combine Spain with Portugal or France, one eSIM Ahora regional package covers both without multiplying daily charges.
  • Secondary device: if you bring an iPad or cellular Apple Watch, EE charges £2.47/day extra per device. A data-only eSIM loads on the iPad with no added EE charge.

How to activate roaming on EE before travel

EE activates roaming automatically on most post-July 2022 plans. To verify:

  1. Open the My EE app on iOS or Android.
  2. Go to Usage & Bills > Roaming.
  3. Confirm Roam Abroad is on. If not, turn it on manually (no charge to activate; you only pay when you use it).
  4. In your iPhone or Android Settings, enable Data Roaming before you land in Spain.

Some users report EE sends a roaming confirmation SMS on arrival. The £2.47 charge shows on your next billing cycle, not as an instant debit.

APN setup in Spain

EE uses the everywhere APN on roaming. Automatic setup on modern iOS and Android. If you hit connection issues:

  • iOS: Settings > Mobile Data > Mobile Data Network > APN = everywhere.
  • Android: Settings > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names > APN = everywhere, type = default,supl.

With eSIM Ahora the APN config comes pre-loaded in the eSIM profile you download via QR. No manual edits needed.

Comparison with other UK carriers in Spain

EE isn't the only UK carrier charging roaming post-Brexit. Pricing snapshot as of May 2026:

UK Carrier Daily charge Spain Data FUP Spanish network
EE £2.47/day 15–75 GB per plan Movistar
Vodafone UK £2.42/day 25 GB (standard plans) Vodafone Spain
Three UK £2.00/day 12 GB (Go Roam) Orange
O2 UK £2.50/day 25 GB (O2 Travel) Movistar

EE and O2 UK use Movistar (best rural coverage). Vodafone UK uses its own Spanish network (good in cities, spotty on coast). Three UK uses Orange (middle-ground coverage). Price-wise, Three UK is cheapest (£2.00/day), but its 12 GB FUP is the tightest.

None of these carriers offer per-GB plans like eSIM Ahora. All charge per day of use, regardless of whether you consume 50 MB or 10 GB.

Installing eSIM Ahora in Spain: step-by-step

If you choose eSIM Ahora over EE roaming, setup takes 30 seconds:

  1. Buy a plan for Spain at /buy/spain. You get a QR by email instantly.
  2. On your iPhone (iOS 12.1+) or Android (with eSIM support), go to Settings > Mobile Data (iOS) or Connections > SIM Manager (Android).
  3. Pick Add Data Plan or Add eSIM.
  4. Scan the QR with your camera.
  5. Name the plan (e.g., "Spain eSIM").
  6. Toggle Mobile Data on for the new eSIM profile. Your EE physical SIM stays active for UK calls/SMS.
  7. Land in Spain, power on, and the eSIM auto-connects to Movistar.

You can keep both SIM active (dual SIM). Set eSIM for data-only, EE SIM for calls-only. This avoids EE's £2.47/day charge (you don't use EE data, only eSIM Ahora).

eSIM-compatible devices

eSIM Ahora works on:

  • iPhone: XS, XS Max, XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 (all models).
  • Samsung Galaxy: S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, Z Flip/Fold 3+.
  • Google Pixel: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 (all models).
  • iPad: Pro 2018+, Air 2019+, Mini 2019+.
  • Apple Watch: Series 5+ cellular (requires paired iPhone with eSIM).

If your phone doesn't support eSIM, EE Roaming is your only option without buying a Spanish physical SIM.

FAQs about roaming and limits

Does EE charge extra for calls within Spain?

No. With the £2.47/day pass, local calls within Spain and to the UK are included (unlimited). You only pay the flat daily fee.

Can I manually disable EE roaming?

Yes. In My EE, go to Roaming and turn off Roam Abroad. This stops the £2.47/day charge but also blocks data in Spain. Emergency calls to 112 still work.

What happens if I exceed EE's FUP limit?

EE charges £0.37/MB per excess MB (£380/GB). This happens automatically. Some users report EE texts warnings at 80% and 100% of FUP, but it's not reliable. Best to track usage in My EE.

Does eSIM Ahora require ID verification?

No. We send you the eSIM profile and email it over. No passport or selfie needed. In Spain, GDPR doesn't mandate ID checks for prepay data-only operators.

Can I use hotspot/tethering with EE on roaming?

Yes, if your UK plan includes tethering. The FUP limit (15–75 GB) applies to all data use, including hotspot. With eSIM Ahora you can also tether with no restrictions, subject to your purchased GB cap.

How long does eSIM Ahora activation take?

From QR scan to Movistar connection: 30–60 seconds. Profile downloads in ~5 seconds, network registers automatically on arrival in Spain. No manual APN setup or waiting hours.

FAQ

How much does data cost in Spain on a post-Brexit UK contract?

Most UK carriers charge £2.00–£2.50 per roaming day in the EU since 2022. The charge activates on data use, not per calendar day, and grants access to your plan's allowance with FUP limits of 12–75 GB/month depending on contract.

Which mobile network covers Spain's tourist zones best?

Movistar covers 99.8% of Spain's population, including coasts (Costa del Sol, Costa Brava), islands (Balearic, Canary), and major cities. Vodafone and Orange match coverage in urban areas, but Movistar leads in rural interior zones.

Is it legal to use another provider's eSIM in Spain if I have an EE contract?

Yes. Using dual SIM (EE physical SIM for calls + another provider's eSIM for data) is fully legal in the EU and UK. It doesn't breach EE's terms. Just disable mobile data on the EE SIM to avoid the roaming charge.
