EE Roaming vs eSIM 2026 — Which Costs Less on Vacation
EE Roaming vs eSIM 2026: EE charges £25/month in Europe, eSIM from $6-$18 per trip. Compare costs, data, coverage, and when each option makes sense
If you're an EE customer in the United Kingdom and travel outside the country, you face a choice: activate EE roaming or buy a travel eSIM. EE charges £25 per month for its Roam Abroad package across 48 European destinations, while travel eSIMs for Europe start from $6-$18 per week-long trip. At eSIM Ahora we analyze both options with real numbers: how much you pay per day, what data limits you face, which destinations are covered, and when each option makes sense.
What EE roaming includes in 2026
EE offers two international roaming packages:
- Roam Abroad (Europe): £25 per month. Covers 48 European countries, including Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and Greece. You use your UK data, call, and SMS allowance without extra charges within the zone.
- Roam Further (rest of world): £45 per month for destinations like the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, and Turkey. Works the same as Roam Abroad but across ~73 countries outside Europe.
Both packages activate on demand (not a fixed monthly charge): you pay £25 or £45 only during months you travel. If you cross the border for just one day, EE charges you for the entire month.
EE's Fair Use Policy (FUP) limits roaming within the European Union to 25 GB per month for unlimited-data contracts. If your UK plan has 100 GB, in Spain you only use 25 GB. Beyond that limit, EE charges £0.30 per MB (equivalent to £307 per GB extra).
What travel eSIMs like eSIM Ahora offer
A travel eSIM is a data profile you install on a compatible phone (iPhone XS or later, Google Pixel 3 or later, Samsung Galaxy S20 or later). You register online, buy a data package for your destination country, scan a QR code, and the eSIM activates in 30 seconds. You don't swap your physical SIM or lose your UK number.
At eSIM Ahora we cover over 180 countries with per-package data rates:
- Europe (Spain, France, Italy, Greece): $6-$18 per 3-10 GB valid for 7-30 days. Example: 5 GB in Spain for $9, valid for 15 days.
- United States: $9-$23 per 3-10 GB, 7-30 days of validity. See plans for USA.
- Mexico: $7-$20 per 3-10 GB. Check packages for Mexico.
- Turkey: $8-$18 per 3-10 GB. Review options in Turkey.
No FUP or throttling: the entire package is high-speed 4G/5G traffic. Once depleted, the eSIM stops working (no overage charges per MB).
Cost comparison: 7 days in Spain
Suppose you travel one week to Spain and use 8 GB of data (streaming, maps, video calls).
| Item | EE Roam Abroad | eSIM Ahora |
|---|---|---|
| Package cost | £25 (full month, even if you travel 7 days) | $11 per 10 GB, 15 days |
| Data included | 25 GB (FUP limit) | 10 GB no throttling |
| Actual use | 8 GB | 8 GB |
| Cost per GB used | £3.13 | $1.38 |
| Total cost | £25 | $11 |
| Difference | — | Save ~£14 |
EE charges you for the full month even if you use one week; with an eSIM you pay only for the data you buy. If you travel 3 days, EE still charges £25; with eSIM Ahora you pay $6-$9 for a small package.
Cost comparison: 14 days in the United States
Two-week trip to New York and California, estimated 12 GB consumption.
| Item | EE Roam Further | eSIM Ahora |
|---|---|---|
| Package cost | £45 (full month) | $20 per 15 GB, 30 days |
| Data included | 25 GB (FUP) | 15 GB no throttling |
| Actual use | 12 GB | 12 GB |
| Cost per GB used | £3.75 | $1.33 |
| Total cost | £45 | $20 |
| Difference | — | Save ~£25 |
With EE you pay £45 even though you travel 14 days of a 30-day month. With a travel eSIM you pay only for the package you need with no unused days.
Coverage: where each option works
EE Roam Abroad covers 48 European countries (entire EU plus Switzerland, Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein). Roam Further adds ~73 destinations: United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Turkey, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Israel, and others.
EE does not cover popular destinations like Vietnam, Morocco, Egypt, Argentina, Chile, and most of Africa and the Middle East outside the emirates.
At eSIM Ahora we cover over 180 countries, including those EE omits:
- Morocco: $7-$16 per 3-10 GB. See plans for Morocco.
- Egypt: $8-$18 per 3-10 GB. Review options in Egypt.
- Argentina, Chile, Colombia: $7-$20 per 3-10 GB. Check plans for Argentina.
- Vietnam, Thailand, Japan: $6-$23 per 3-15 GB. See packages for Thailand or Japan.
If your itinerary mixes countries inside and outside EE's network (for example, Spain plus Morocco), with EE you pay £25 for Spain plus standard roaming rates in Morocco (up to £6 per MB). With an eSIM you buy a package for each country and know your total expense before you travel.
Calls and SMS: the key difference
With EE Roam Abroad and Roam Further you keep your UK number active: you receive and make calls without extra charges within the covered zone. If someone calls your +44 number, the call comes through just like in the United Kingdom.
With a travel eSIM you receive data only. You have no local voice number or traditional SMS. For calls you use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Telegram, or Skype with your UK number through data. If you need to receive bank SMS codes at your UK number, keep your EE physical SIM active in the second slot of your phone (iPhones with eSIM have dual-SIM: eSIM for data + physical SIM for calls).
This limitation matters if:
- You need to call hotels or restaurants that don't accept WhatsApp.
- You expect work calls on your UK number during the trip.
- You use SMS authentication in banking apps (some banks now accept app authentication — verify before you travel).
If your phone supports dual-SIM, configure EE on the physical SIM for calls and the travel eSIM for data. You disable "mobile data" on the EE line and enable "mobile data" only on the eSIM. This way you receive calls on your UK number without paying EE data roaming charges.
When EE roaming makes sense
EE makes sense in these cases:
You travel more than 20 days per month: if you spend 3 weeks in Europe, £25 equals £1.19 per day. A 20 GB eSIM for 30 days costs $13-$20 (about £1.17-£1.80 per day), but EE gives you 25 GB plus unlimited calls. EE's advantage grows the more days you travel within the same calendar month.
You need frequent voice calls: if you work remotely and receive calls from UK clients, keeping your +44 number active without setting up VoIP apps saves time.
You change countries every 2-3 days: with EE you pay £25 and cover 48 European countries. With eSIM you buy one package per country ($6-$11 each). If you visit France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany in one week, EE costs £25 total; four eSIMs add up to $22-$44 (depends on data per country). Some eSIM providers offer regional Europe packages covering multiple countries — at eSIM Ahora we don't have those yet (as of July 2026), so for multi-country trips within Europe, EE can be simpler.
Your consumption exceeds 25 GB per month: if you use 30-40 GB (remote work, 4K streaming, hotspot for laptop), EE's FUP limit slows you down. But if your UK plan has unlimited data and you accept the 25 GB limit, £25 for 25 GB (£1 per GB) competes with eSIM on long trips.
When a travel eSIM makes sense
eSIMs from eSIM Ahora have the advantage in:
Short trips (1-10 days): if you go 5 days to Barcelona, you pay $9 per 5 GB instead of £25 for a full month of EE. You save ~£16.
Destinations outside EE's network: Morocco, Egypt, Vietnam, Argentina, Peru, Colombia don't appear in Roam Abroad or Roam Further. EE charges standard roaming rates (£6 per MB, equals £6,144 per GB). A 5 GB eSIM for Morocco costs $11; the same use with EE sums to £30,720. The difference is extreme.
Multiple trips per year to different countries: if you travel 4 times (7 days each) to different destinations, with EE you pay £25 × 4 months = £100. With eSIM you pay $9-$13 per trip × 4 = $36-$52 (about £29-£42). You save around £58-£71 per year.
Spend control: with EE the charge is monthly. If you travel on the 28th and return on the 3rd of the next month, they charge you £25 × 2 = £50 for a 6-day trip. With eSIM you pay $9-$13 once.
Avoid the 25 GB FUP limit: if your remote work needs 40 GB per month, with EE you exceed the limit and pay £0.30 per MB extra. With a 50 GB eSIM ($28-$38 in some destinations) you have all the traffic without overage charges.
Device installation and compatibility
To use an eSIM you need a compatible phone. EE supported eSIM in the United Kingdom from 2019 onward, so if your phone already has eSIM configured with EE, it also supports eSIMs from other providers.
Devices compatible with eSIM (partial list as of 2026):
- iPhone: XS, XS Max, XR, and all models from 2018 onward (11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16).
- Google Pixel: 3, 3 XL, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and variants a/Pro/XL.
- Samsung Galaxy: S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, Z Flip, Z Fold (from 2020 onward).
- Others: Motorola Razr (2019+), Oppo Find X3/X5, Huawei P40 (no Google Play but supports eSIM).
To install an eSIM Ahora eSIM:
- You buy the package online (credit card or PayPal).
- You receive an email with a QR code.
- You go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Plan (iOS) or Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Add (Android).
- You scan the QR with your phone camera.
- The profile installs in 10-30 seconds.
- You enable "Mobile Data" on the new eSIM and disable data on your EE physical SIM (to prevent accidental roaming charges).
The eSIM activates automatically when you reach the destination country and your phone detects the local network. You don't need to configure APN or restart.
Real example: 10 days in Greece
Trip to Athens and Santorini, 10 days, 10 GB consumption (Google Maps, cloud photos, video calls).
With EE Roam Abroad:
- Cost: £25 (full month).
- Data: 25 GB available (FUP), you use 10 GB.
- Calls: unlimited within Greece and to the UK.
- Cost per day: £2.50.
With eSIM Ahora:
- Cost: $13 per 10 GB valid for 15 days (see plans for Greece).
- Data: 10 GB no throttling.
- Calls: WhatsApp/FaceTime only (data).
- Cost per day: $1.30 (about £1.04).
- Savings: Around £11.
If you need to make reservations by phone in Greek, EE lets you call directly. With eSIM you use WhatsApp or ask the hotel to contact you by email. Most hotels and restaurants in tourist destinations accept WhatsApp or have Google Maps listings where you leave messages.
FAQ
Can I use EE Roam Abroad and an eSIM at the same time?
Yes, if your phone supports dual-SIM (eSIM + physical SIM). You configure EE on the physical SIM for calls and SMS only, and activate a travel eSIM for data. In Settings > Mobile Data you select the eSIM as your default data line and disable "Mobile Data" on the EE line. This way you receive calls on your UK number without paying EE data roaming charges.
Does EE charge for roaming if I don't use it?
No. Roam Abroad and Roam Further activate automatically when you use data, calls, or SMS in a covered country. EE charges you £25 or £45 that calendar month, even if you only use the service one day. If you travel but keep mobile data off (use WiFi only), EE doesn't charge. Some customers report charges for automatic app SMS (two-factor authentication) that arrive when you land — disable "roaming data" and "roaming SMS" before you fly to prevent accidental activation.
Do travel eSIMs work in rural areas the same as EE?
It depends on the local network the eSIM uses. In Spain, the eSIM provider uses Orange's network (second-largest coverage behind Movistar, covers 99.5% of population). EE in roaming also uses Orange or Movistar depending on agreements. In rural Andalusia or Galicia, both options have similar coverage. In destinations like Turkey, we use Turkcell (98% coverage of major roads); EE in roaming uses Turkcell or Vodafone Turkey, comparable coverage. Check the local network on each country page before you buy.
What happens if I use up the eSIM data before I return?
The eSIM stops working — no overage charges. You buy another package (top-up) from the provider's app or web portal, scan the new QR, and the profile updates in 30 seconds. The process is the same as the first install. Alternatively, find public WiFi (hotel, café, airport) until you get home. With EE, if you exceed the 25 GB FUP limit, you pay £0.30 per MB (£307 per GB), so running out with EE costs much more.
Can I share eSIM data with other devices (hotspot)?
Yes, you enable personal hotspot on your phone and share the eSIM connection with laptop, tablet, or other phones. Some traditional carriers block hotspot on roaming plans; the eSIM provider has no restrictions — you use the GB however you want. Keep in mind hotspot drains battery fast; bring a power bank if you plan to use it several hours per day.
