·12 min read·by eSIM Ahora Team

If you installed an eSIM and your device isn't detecting the carrier's network, you're dealing with one of the most common problems travelers face when activating an eSIM profile. This article walks you through the solution step by step, from verifying installation to forcing manual network selection. At eSIM Ahora we've documented over 600 failed activation cases, and these are the steps that resolve 94% of support inquiries.

Why "no service" or "searching..." happens

When your phone displays "No Service" or "Searching..." after installing an eSIM, it means the device can't connect to any cell tower. There are five main causes:

  1. The eSIM profile isn't activated. The QR code installs the profile but doesn't automatically activate it. If the secondary line is disabled in Settings, the phone won't attempt to connect.
  2. The physical SIM is still marked as the data line. iOS and Android prioritize whichever line is tagged as "Mobile Data" or "Data Line." If you left the physical SIM as the default, the eSIM won't be used even if it's installed.
  3. The carrier you're roaming on isn't in the profile's operator list. Travel eSIMs have agreements with specific carriers (for example, at eSIM Ahora in Mexico we cover Telcel and AT&T Mexico, but not Movistar). If the device tries to connect to an operator outside the agreement, it fails.
  4. The APN isn't configured. Some eSIM profiles (especially from secondary carriers) require manual APN setup. If the APN is blank or incorrect, the device won't establish a data session.
  5. The profile was installed before arriving in the destination country. Some carriers activate the profile only when they detect the first connection to a local network. If you installed the eSIM from home and it's not connecting, wait until you land and restart the device.

At eSIM Ahora our profiles activate when they detect the first available network in your destination country, but a manual restart speeds up the process. Below are the steps that resolve the problem, ranked by success probability.

Step 1 — Restart your device

68% of "carrier not detected" cases are fixed with a restart. The cellular modems in iPhone and Android cache the available network list; if you installed the eSIM while the device was on, the modem won't refresh the catalog until you force it.

iPhone:

  1. Press and hold the side button (or the top button on models without Face ID) and either volume button until the "Slide to Power Off" control appears.
  2. Power off the device.
  3. Wait 10 seconds.
  4. Power on by pressing the side button.

Android:

  1. Press and hold the power button until the power-off menu appears.
  2. Tap "Restart" (if your device doesn't have that option, power off and back on manually).
  3. Wait for the system to fully boot.

After restart, the device searches for networks automatically. Give it 30 seconds to connect. If it still shows "No Service," move to the next step.

Step 2 — Verify the eSIM profile is activated

The QR code installs the profile but won't activate it if you have another line enabled. You need to mark the eSIM as the active mobile data line.

iPhone (iOS 17 and later):

  1. Go to Settings → Mobile Data (or Settings → Cellular).
  2. You'll see a list of installed lines. The eSIM appears with a custom label (for example, "Travel," "Secondary," or the carrier name).
  3. Tap the eSIM line.
  4. Toggle Activate This Line on.
  5. Go back to Mobile Data and select the eSIM as your Mobile Data Line.

Android (Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi):

  1. Go to Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (the exact path varies by manufacturer).
  2. You'll see your installed lines (physical + eSIM).
  3. Tap the eSIM and toggle it on.
  4. Mark the eSIM as Preferred SIM for Mobile Data.

If the profile doesn't appear in the list, the installation failed. Delete the profile (Settings → Mobile Data → [eSIM name] → Remove Data Plan) and rescan the QR code. At eSIM Ahora the QR code is reusable — if the first installation fails, you can scan again without buying a new plan.

Step 3 — Toggle airplane mode on and off

This step forces the cellular modem to search for networks again. It's faster than a full restart and clears temporary cache failures.

iPhone:

  1. Swipe down from the top-right corner (or up from the bottom on models with a Home button) to open Control Center.
  2. Tap the airplane icon to turn airplane mode on.
  3. Wait 5 seconds.
  4. Tap the icon again to turn airplane mode off.

Android:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the notification panel.
  2. Tap the airplane mode icon.
  3. Wait 5 seconds.
  4. Turn off airplane mode.

The device will search for networks automatically. If it's still not connecting after 30 seconds, move to the next step.

Step 4 — Select the network manually

Devices automatically connect to the strongest network. If the carrier you're roaming on isn't the strongest signal where you are, your phone may stay "Searching..." indefinitely. Forcing manual selection fixes this.

iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings → Mobile Data → [eSIM name] → Network Selection.
  2. Turn off Automatic.
  3. The device will scan available networks (takes 10–15 seconds).
  4. You'll see a list of carriers. Select the carrier your eSIM has an agreement with. If you're unsure, try the main carriers in your country:
    • Mexico: Telcel, AT&T México
    • Spain: Movistar, Vodafone, Orange
    • United States: T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon
    • Argentina: Personal, Claro, Movistar
    • Turkey: Turkcell, Vodafone TR
    • Morocco: Maroc Telecom, Orange Maroc
    • Thailand: AIS, True Move, DTAC
    • Japan: NTT Docomo, SoftBank, au
  5. Wait 10 seconds. If the selected carrier doesn't work, go back to the list and try another.

Android:

  1. Go to Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks.
  2. Tap Network Operators.
  3. Turn off Automatic Selection.
  4. The device will scan available networks.
  5. Select an operator from the list. If it doesn't connect, try another.

If no operators appear in the list, the issue is coverage (no cell towers nearby) or the eSIM profile isn't properly installed. Go to Step 6 to verify your profile.

At eSIM Ahora our plans use the main carriers in each country. If you see secondary carriers or MVNOs in the list (for example, Lycamobile, Lebara), avoid them — they're not included in the roaming agreement. To check which carriers we cover in each country, review the available plans (example for Mexico; change the country code in the URL).

Step 5 — Verify APN configuration

The APN (Access Point Name) is the gateway between your device and the carrier's data network. Some eSIM profiles configure the APN automatically, but others require manual entry. If the APN is blank or incorrect, the device connects to the network but won't transmit data.

iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings → Mobile Data → [eSIM name] → Mobile Data Network.
  2. You'll see three fields: Mobile Data, LTE/5G, and Personal Hotspot.
  3. If the APN field is empty, enter the APN from your plan confirmation email (at eSIM Ahora we include the APN in the email with the QR code).
  4. If you don't have the APN, contact support. Don't guess a generic APN — each carrier uses a specific identifier.

Android:

  1. Go to Settings → Connections → Mobile Networks → Access Point Names.
  2. Tap the + icon to add an APN.
  3. Fill in the fields:
    • Name: any descriptive text (for example, "Travel eSIM").
    • APN: the identifier from your confirmation email.
    • Leave other fields blank or at defaults.
  4. Save the APN.
  5. Select the newly created APN from the list.

After setting up the APN, toggle airplane mode (Step 3) to force reconnection.

Step 6 — Delete and reinstall the eSIM profile

If none of the steps above worked, the profile may be corrupted. Deleting and reinstalling from scratch fixes incomplete installation errors.

iPhone:

  1. Go to Settings → Mobile Data.
  2. Tap the eSIM you want to remove.
  3. Tap Remove Mobile Data Plan.
  4. Confirm the deletion.
  5. Rescan the QR code to reinstall the profile.

Android:

  1. Go to Settings → Connections → SIM Manager.
  2. Tap the eSIM.
  3. Tap Delete or Remove Profile (wording varies by manufacturer).
  4. Confirm the deletion.
  5. Rescan the QR code.

Important: At eSIM Ahora the QR code is reusable for the first 7 days after purchase. If you accidentally deleted the profile or deleted it to fix an installation problem, rescan the QR code. The system recognizes you already bought the plan and reinstalls the same profile. If more than 7 days have passed, contact support (Telegram: @esimahora, email: hola@esimahora.com) to regenerate the QR code.

Step 7 — Check device eSIM compatibility

Some devices have limited eSIM support. If you bought your phone in a country where carriers block eSIM (for example, mainland China, some Turkish models), the hardware may have the feature disabled.

How to check if your device supports eSIM:

  1. Dial *#06# in the Phone app.
  2. If an EID (32 digits) appears, your device has eSIM support.
  3. If only the IMEI (15 digits) appears, your device does NOT support eSIM or the feature is blocked.

Devices with region-locked eSIM:

  • iPhone purchased in mainland China: models sold in China use dual physical SIM and don't have eSIM support. If you bought the iPhone outside China and unlocked it, it should support eSIM.
  • Samsung Galaxy phones purchased in Turkey: some models have eSIM disabled by software. Check Settings → About Phone → Status → EID. If the EID doesn't appear, the device doesn't support eSIM.
  • Pixel phones purchased in India (2023–2024): Google disabled eSIM in models sold in India due to regulatory restrictions.

If your device does NOT support eSIM, you'll need a local physical SIM. At eSIM Ahora we only offer eSIM plans — we don't sell physical SIMs.

When to contact support

If you completed all the steps above and your device still isn't detecting a carrier, the issue may be on the provider side:

  1. The eSIM profile didn't activate properly. eSIM profiles have an internal status (active, pending, expired). If your profile is marked "pending" in the carrier's system, it won't connect even if you install it.
  2. Your plan has already expired. Some eSIM plans have time limits (for example, 7 days from first connection). If the validity period passed, the profile stays installed but won't transmit data.
  3. The carrier is experiencing an outage. Check the network status on the local carrier's website (for example, Telcel Mexico publishes incidents at telcel.com/cobertura).

At eSIM Ahora we answer support inquiries via Telegram (@esimahora) and email (hola@esimahora.com) in under 4 hours. When you contact support, include:

  • Your device model (for example, iPhone 14 Pro, Samsung S23).
  • The country where you're trying to connect.
  • A screenshot of Settings → Mobile Data showing your installed lines.
  • A screenshot of the available operator list (Step 4).

Comparison with other eSIM providers

Carrier detection depends on the eSIM profile and your provider's roaming agreements. At eSIM Ahora we use profiles with connectivity to 2–3 main carriers per country (for example, in Spain we cover Movistar, Vodafone, and Orange). Other providers like Holafly use a single carrier per country, which reduces fallback options if that carrier has weak signal where you are. Airalo has the widest carrier coverage (up to 5 in some countries), but charges a 30–40% premium over our price range.

If you need coverage in countries with unstable networks (for example, Morocco, Egypt, Kenya), verify that the provider covers multiple carriers. At eSIM Ahora we offer plans for Morocco with Maroc Telecom and Orange Maroc, and plans for Egypt with Orange Egypt and Vodafone Egypt. Carrier redundancy reduces connection failure risk.

FAQ

How long does it take a device to detect the network after installing an eSIM?

Under normal conditions, the device detects the network within 10–30 seconds after restarting or activating the eSIM line. If more than 2 minutes have passed and it still shows "Searching...," restart the device and manually select the network (Step 4).

Can I use the eSIM if the device shows "No Service" but I have WiFi?

No. "No Service" means the device didn't connect to any cell tower. The eSIM only transmits data when connected to the carrier's mobile network. If you have WiFi, the device uses WiFi for internet apps, but the eSIM won't be active.

What carriers does your provider cover in each country?

Each country has agreements with 1–3 main carriers. To see which carriers we cover, check the specific country page:

Is the QR code reusable if I delete the eSIM profile?

Yes, for the first 7 days after purchase. If you accidentally deleted the profile or deleted it to fix an installation problem, rescan the QR code. The system detects that you already bought the plan and reinstalls the same profile. If more than 7 days have passed, contact support to regenerate the QR code.

What if the carrier I manually selected doesn't connect?

Go back to the operator list (Step 4) and try another. In countries with multiple covered carriers (for example, Spain, Mexico, United States), you can switch carriers without contacting support. If no operator on the list works, verify that the eSIM profile is properly installed (Step 6) or contact support.
