eSIM not working 2026 — fix connection in 10 minutes
eSIM not working: 8 steps to fix connection (roaming, APN, network selection). Solve in 10 min for Mexico, Spain, Japan, Turkey — coverage, pricing
You just installed a travel eSIM, the QR scanned without issues, the profile shows up in Settings — but there's no internet. The signal bar displays coverage, the plan is active, and yet no app loads. At eSIM Ahora we've seen this scenario hundreds of times: 87% of cases resolve with 3 configuration steps that iOS and Android hide in secondary menus. This guide takes you from zero connection to full data in under 10 minutes.
Why an installed eSIM doesn't deliver internet immediately
An installed eSIM does NOT equal a working eSIM. Installation adds the cryptographic profile to the chip, but the operating system must still:
- Choose which SIM to use for cellular data — if you have an active physical SIM, iOS and Android default to prioritizing it; the eSIM remains in voice-only or inactive mode.
- Enable data roaming on the eSIM profile — travel eSIMs function 100% on roaming; if this option is off, your phone blocks all data traffic.
- Select the correct network — in destinations with 4+ carriers (Mexico with Telcel/AT&T/Movistar, Spain with Movistar/Orange/Vodafone), automatic selection sometimes fails and locks onto a network with no roaming agreement.
- Load the APN — Android and some iPads require manual Access Point Name configuration; without the correct APN, authentication fails before IP assignment.
None of these steps indicate an eSIM defect — they're operating system design choices to prevent unexpected roaming charges. For a travel eSIM you deliberately purchased, those protections become obstacles.
Step 1 — Verify the eSIM profile is activated
iPhone/iPad:
- Open Settings > Cellular Data (or Settings > Cellular on versions before iOS 17).
- You'll see a list of lines: your physical SIM + the newly installed eSIM.
- Tap the eSIM line.
- Confirm the Turn On This Line toggle is green.
If it's off, turn it on. The phone will take 5–15 seconds to register on the network.
Android (stock and Samsung OneUI):
- Settings > Connections > SIM card manager (or Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs on Pixel).
- You'll see the physical SIM + the eSIM.
- Tap the eSIM and toggle it on.
If the toggle was already green, move to Step 2 — the issue is data configuration, not profile activation.
Step 2 — Select the eSIM as your mobile data line
This is the most common mistake: the eSIM is active but the system keeps using the physical SIM for data.
iPhone/iPad:
- Settings > Cellular Data > Cellular Data (yes, twice — the first Cellular Data is the section, the second is the option).
- Select the eSIM line (it will show the carrier name or the alias you gave it, like "Mexico eSIM" or "Spain Trip").
- If you have iOS 17+, also check Settings > Cellular Data > Low Data Mode and disable it for the eSIM — some users report Low Data Mode blocks initial connection.
Android:
- Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > Mobile data (or on Pixel: Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Preferred SIM for mobile data).
- Select the eSIM.
- Wait 10 seconds — Android deregisters the physical SIM from data and registers the eSIM.
If after this the signal bar still shows no 4G/LTE/5G next to the carrier name, move to Step 3.
Step 3 — Enable data roaming on the eSIM profile
Travel eSIMs ARE roaming by design. If data roaming is disabled, no traffic flows.
iPhone/iPad:
- Settings > Cellular Data > tap the eSIM line.
- Enable Data Roaming.
- If a warning message appears about charges, ignore it — your prepaid eSIM doesn't bill by usage.
Android:
- Settings > Connections > Mobile networks (or Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > [eSIM] > Roaming).
- Enable Data Roaming.
In Mexico, Spain, and the United States, where we operate with direct network agreements (see Mexico plans, Spain plans, USA plans), data roaming is required even if the eSIM uses the local network — the technical profile is configured as roaming to enable portability across countries.
Step 4 — Force manual network selection
Automatic network selection sometimes fails in destinations with multiple carriers. For example, in Turkey (eSIM Turkey) there's Turkcell, Vodafone TR, and Türk Telekom; if your eSIM has an agreement with Turkcell but your phone locks onto Vodafone, you'll see signal bars but zero data.
iPhone/iPad:
- Settings > Cellular Data > tap the eSIM line.
- Network Selection > toggle off Automatic.
- Wait 20–40 seconds — your phone will scan available networks.
- You'll see a list of carriers. Select the one matching your eSIM (we specify it in the confirmation email; if you don't recall, try the carrier with the most bars).
Android:
- Settings > Connections > Mobile networks (or Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > [eSIM] > Operator).
- Toggle off Select automatically.
- Wait for the scan and pick the network.
If no network on the list allows registration (you'll see "Registration denied" or it never connects), your eSIM may have no coverage at that location — contact support before spending more time.
Step 5 — Configure the APN (Android and iPad mostly)
iOS on iPhone handles APN automatically from iOS 15 onward. Android and iPad Wi-Fi+Cellular sometimes require manual configuration.
Android:
- Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names (or Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > [eSIM] > Access Point).
- If the list is empty or the existing APN doesn't match your carrier, tap + or Add APN.
- Under Name put anything ("Travel eSIM" works).
- Under APN enter your carrier's APN:
- Telcel (Mexico):
internet.itelcel.com - Movistar (Spain):
movistar.es - AT&T (USA/Mexico):
broadband - Claro (LATAM):
claro.com.ar(Argentina),claro.com.co(Colombia),claro.com.br(Brazil) - TIM (Brazil):
tim.br - Others: check the provider's confirmation email or contact support.
- Telcel (Mexico):
- Leave other fields blank (Username, Password, APN Type = default).
- Save and select the newly created APN.
- Restart your phone.
iPad Wi-Fi+Cellular (iOS 16 or lower):
- Settings > Cellular Data > tap the eSIM line.
- Mobile Data Network > under the Cellular Data section, enter the APN.
- Save.
iOS 17+ on iPad usually auto-configures the APN, but if it doesn't connect after Step 4, it's worth checking.
Step 6 — Restart the device and turn off Airplane Mode
This step sounds obvious, but order matters:
- Enable Airplane Mode.
- Wait 10 seconds.
- Restart the device (complete shutdown, not just screen lock).
- When it powers on, disable Airplane Mode.
The restart forces the modem to re-read the eSIM profile configuration. In 15% of cases, correct configuration only takes effect after restart.
Step 7 — Verify data usage and plan status
If you completed the 6 previous steps and still have no internet, the issue might be that the plan ran out or expired.
How to check usage:
- In the eSIM Ahora confirmation email we include a link to your data management panel (format
https://esim-ahora.com/account/...). - Log in with your purchase email.
- You'll see remaining GB and expiration date.
Common scenarios:
- Plan expired: travel eSIMs are valid for 7–30 days from activation (not from purchase). If you activated the eSIM 25 days ago and bought a 15-day plan, it expired 10 days ago.
- Data depleted: if you bought 3 GB for Japan and used all 3 GB, service stops (we don't apply unlimited throttling like Holafly — the prepaid model is transparent).
- Activation pending: some eSIMs activate on first data use (not on QR scan). If you scanned the QR at home before traveling, the day counter hasn't started — but if the system doesn't detect the destination network, it won't activate either. Solution: turn off Airplane Mode when you arrive in the destination country and wait 2 minutes.
Step 8 — Reinstall the eSIM profile (last resort)
If none of the previous steps worked, the eSIM profile may be corrupt (this happens in <1% of installations, typically by interrupting the QR scan before it completes).
iPhone/iPad:
- Settings > Cellular Data > tap the eSIM line > Remove Cellular Plan.
- Confirm.
- Go to the original email with the eSIM Ahora QR and scan it again.
- Follow Steps 1–6 of this guide.
Android:
- Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > tap the eSIM > Delete.
- Rescan the QR.
⚠️ Warning: some providers (Airalo, Holafly) invalidate the QR after first installation — you can't reinstall without buying again. At eSIM Ahora, the QR is reusable for the plan's entire validity; if you need to reinstall, you can.
Operating system-specific errors
iPhone — "Couldn't Activate Cellular Plan"
This message when scanning the QR means the profile couldn't download from the carrier's server. Causes:
- Unstable WiFi connection: profile download requires WiFi or data from your physical SIM. Try another WiFi network.
- Carrier's server down: wait 30 minutes and try again.
- QR already used and blocked by the carrier: if you bought from another provider that doesn't allow reinstalls, the QR burned out. Contact that provider.
At eSIM Ahora, our QRs never expire while the plan is active.
Android — "Network error" or "SIM not provisioned"
This appears when you try to call or use data with the eSIM selected. Causes:
- Missing or incorrect APN: return to Step 5.
- Data-only eSIM with no voice: many travel eSIMs (including ours) provide data only, no calling. If you try to call, you'll see this error — it's normal. Use WhatsApp/Telegram for calls.
- IMEI not registered on the network: happens in countries with mandatory IMEI registration (Turkey, Egypt, Morocco). If your phone wasn't purchased locally and you've had it for >3 months, the network may block it. Solution: register the IMEI on the local regulator's page (in Turkey it's BTK.gov.tr).
iPad — "No Service" permanent
Some iPad Wi-Fi+Cellular models (especially iPad Air 3rd gen and iPad 6th gen) have firmware bugs with eSIM on iOS 15.x. Solution:
- Update to iOS 16.3 or higher.
- If you're already on iOS 16+, reset network settings: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This erases saved WiFi, VPN, and cellular config — afterward reinstall the eSIM.
When to contact eSIM Ahora support
Contact support if after the 8 steps:
- The eSIM still won't deliver data anywhere (you tried 2+ locations ≥1 km apart).
- Your phone shows "Registration denied" on all networks in the country.
- The management panel shows the plan active with GB available, but the phone reports "No Service".
How to contact:
- Email: soporte@esim-ahora.com (response <4 hours during CET business hours).
- Telegram: @esimahora_support.
Include in your message:
- Exact device model (iPhone 14 Pro, Samsung S23, Pixel 7, etc.).
- iOS/Android version.
- Country where you're trying to connect.
- Screenshot of Settings > Cellular Data (iPhone) or Settings > Connections > Mobile networks (Android) showing the eSIM configuration.
- Connectivity test result: with the eSIM selected as data, open a browser and try to load
http://detectportal.firefox.com— if it loads "success", you have connectivity but something's blocking HTTPS; if nothing loads, you're not getting an IP.
Comparison — average resolution time by provider
Based on TrustPilot data (April 2026), time from "eSIM won't connect" to full resolution:
| Provider | Avg. time | Support channel | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| eSIM Ahora | 3.2 hours | Email, Telegram | 9:00–21:00 CET |
| Holafly | 45 min | Live chat 24/7 | 24/7 |
| Airalo | 8.1 hours | 24/7 (slow) | |
| Saily | 12 hours | EST hours |
Holafly has real-time support, making them faster on complex troubleshooting; at eSIM Ahora we prioritize pricing ($3–$8 per 3 GB in Mexico, Colombia, Argentina vs. $19–$27 at Holafly) in exchange for efficient asynchronous support.
Prevention — how to avoid connection issues on your next trip
- Scan the QR 24–48 hours before traveling, at home on stable WiFi. Installation completes, but activation (and the day counter) doesn't start until you use data at your destination.
- Verify device compatibility before buying. eSIM requires iPhone XS/XR or newer, Google Pixel 3 or newer, Samsung Galaxy S20/Note20 or newer. Chinese Xiaomi/Oppo models often lack eSIM even if hardware supports it (Xiaomi blocks eSIM by software in China).
- Note the carrier's APN before traveling (it's in the confirmation email). If you're heading to a place with limited WiFi (safari, mountains), having the APN saved in Notes saves you searching for connection to look it up.
- Disable automatic VPN and private DNS in Settings while configuring the eSIM. Some VPNs (NordVPN, ProtonVPN) block initial cellular connection if set to "Always-on" mode.
FAQ
Why does the eSIM show signal but no internet?
The signal bar indicates registration on the cellular network (your phone "sees" the tower), but data flow requires additional authentication: active data roaming, correct APN, and the selected network with a valid roaming agreement. If any fail, you get signal without internet. Review Steps 2–5 of this guide.
How long does the eSIM take to connect after enabling data roaming?
Between 10–60 seconds. Your phone must re-authenticate with the network, get an IP from the carrier's DHCP server, and register the data session. If after 2 minutes you still see no 4G/LTE on the status bar, force manual network selection (Step 4).
Does reinstalling the eSIM erase remaining plan data?
No with most providers — the plan is tied to the profile, not the QR. If you bought 5 GB, used 2 GB, then reinstalled, you still have 3 GB left. The QR is reusable. On Airalo and Holafly, reinstalling may invalidate the plan — each provider has different policy.
Does the eSIM drain battery faster than a physical SIM?
No. The eSIM and physical SIM use the same cellular modem; battery drain is identical. If you notice higher drain after installing the eSIM, it's likely because you now have 2 active lines (physical + eSIM) and your phone maintains simultaneous registration on 2 networks — that does use more power. Solution: disable the physical SIM while using your travel eSIM.
What if the eSIM QR won't scan?
If the camera doesn't recognize the QR, turn screen brightness to max (if scanning from another screen) or print the QR. Alternatively, the confirmation email includes a manual activation code: on iPhone, Settings > Cellular Data > Add Plan > Enter Manually and paste the SM-DP+ code. On Android, Settings > Connections > Add Mobile Plan > Enter Code.
Can I use the eSIM on an Apple Watch?
Travel eSIMs for Apple Watch require a wearable-specific plan, not a smartphone plan. Most providers only sell eSIM for phones and tablets. If you need a standalone Apple Watch (without iPhone nearby), buy a wearable plan from your local carrier or wearable-specialized providers (GigSky has Apple Watch plans, though they're pricey: $15 per 1 GB).
