Mobile networks in Australia

Australia has three main carriers: Telstra (the dominant network, largest nationwide coverage especially in rural areas and the Outback), Optus (second largest, broad 5G in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth), and Vodafone Australia (best urban value, more limited outside cities). The eSIM Ahora connects to the strongest available network. Plugs are Type I (Australian, unique — three flat pins in an inverted V), 230V — you need a specific adapter from the US, Europe, or Asia.

Travel tips for Australia

Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE), and Perth (PER) airports offer unlimited free WiFi. The currency is the Australian dollar (AUD); use Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, ANZ, or NAB ATMs — no commission on Visa/Mastercard up to 1000 AUD. Tipping isn't required — Australia has a high minimum wage. At the Great Barrier Reef and remote Outback zones (Uluru, Kakadu, Kimberley) coverage drops significantly — only Telstra has decent presence. Download offline maps for Stuart Highway or Great Ocean Road road trips.

Frequently asked questions about Australia eSIM

Does the eSIM work in the Outback, Uluru, and remote areas?
Only with Telstra. At Alice Springs, Uluru (Ayers Rock), Coober Pedy, and other Outback tourist stops there's stable 4G coverage. Outside settlements, on desert roads between stops, there are 100-300 km stretches without signal. Optus and Vodafone fade quickly off the coast. For camping or caravans, consider satellite backup (Starlink Mini).
Does the eSIM cover Tasmania and other Australian islands?
Yes. Tasmania has full Telstra coverage in Hobart, Launceston, the east coast (Bay of Fires), and west (Strahan). Lord Howe and Norfolk islands have limited coverage — only Telstra. The Great Barrier Reef: coverage from Cairns and Port Douglas on land, but once you board for the Whitsundays or sail offshore, signal disappears.
Does the Australian eSIM cover New Zealand, or only AU territory?
Only Australia. Our Australia eSIM doesn't work in New Zealand — they're separate countries with different carriers (Spark NZ, One NZ, 2degrees). If your trip includes both, consider a regional Oceania eSIM or one eSIM per country. Crossing (Sydney-Auckland flight), your AU eSIM disconnects automatically.
