Mobile networks in Honduras

Honduras has three carriers: Tigo Honduras (Millicom subsidiary, largest market share), Claro Honduras (Mexican América Móvil subsidiary), and Hondutel (state operator, limited presence). The eSIM Ahora connects to the strongest network. Plugs are Type A and B (American format, 110V — same as US and Mexico). 4G coverage reaches Tegucigalpa (capital), San Pedro Sula (economic center), La Ceiba (gateway to Bay Islands), Comayagua, Choluteca, and the Bay Islands (Roatán, Utila, Guanaja).

Travel tips for Honduras

Tegucigalpa (TGU, now limited), Palmerola (XPL, main hub), San Pedro Sula (SAP), and Roatán (RTB) airports offer limited free WiFi. The currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL); use Banco Atlántida, Banpaís, or BAC Credomatic ATMs. USD is widely accepted in Roatán and tourist zones. Tips are 10%. Security varies widely by region — Roatán and tourist zones are safe; Tegucigalpa and SPS have neighborhoods to avoid (ask your hotel). WhatsApp dominates communication. Uber and Yango (not DiDi) apps work in major cities.

Frequently asked questions about Honduras eSIM

Does the Honduras eSIM work in Roatán, Utila, and Mesoamerican Reef diving?
Yes. Tigo and Claro have full 4G coverage in West End and West Bay (Roatán), Utila Town, Guanaja. For diving the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef (Roatán and Utila are world-top PADI certification destinations) coverage extends 5-10 km offshore. Dive shops and catamarans have VHF radio. For Cayos Cochinos excursions coverage is weaker — lodges have basic WiFi.
Does the eSIM cover the Copán ruins and archaeological zones?
Yes. Copán Ruinas (UNESCO, classical Maya civilization) has Tigo 4G coverage in town and the archaeological site. The CA-11 highway between San Pedro Sula and Copán (4h) has reasonable coverage. For excursions to Macaw Mountain Bird Park and Las Sepulturas it also works. Only in deep forest zones or trails to Los Sapos can it drop briefly.
Does the Honduras eSIM work crossing to Guatemala, El Salvador, or Nicaragua?
No. Our Honduras eSIM only works in Honduran territory. Crossing to Guatemala (El Florido near Copán, Agua Caliente), El Salvador (El Poy, El Amatillo), or Nicaragua (El Espino, Las Manos, Guasaule), the eSIM stops working. For Central America loops consider a regional or per-country eSIM. La Ruta Maya tourist routes (Honduras-Guatemala-Mexico) cross multiple borders.
