Mobile networks in Mali

Orange Mali (leader), Malitel (state) and Telecel Mali (Atel) are the main operators. 4G coverage across Bamako (capital), Sikasso, Ségou, Mopti, Koutiala. Orange has broader nationwide coverage. The north (Timbuktu, Gao, Kidal) has very limited coverage due to active armed conflict and zones controlled by jihadist groups. Only militarized zones have intermittently functioning networks. Center-south (Bamako, Sikasso, lower Niger valley) more stable and covered. No commercial 5G. Mali had military coups in 2020 and 2021; transition junta remains in power. Type C/E French plugs, 220V/50Hz.

Mali had significant tourism pre-2012 (Timbuktu, Djenné, Dogon) but the northern crisis effectively shut those down. Bamako and south (Sikasso, Bafoulabé) more visitable. Frequently asked questions about Mali eSIM

Is it safe to travel to Mali in 2025?
North (Timbuktu, Gao, Kidal) and center (Mopti, Dogon region) are NO-GO ZONES per most Western foreign offices — active armed conflict, kidnappings, jihadist presence. Bamako and south are visitable with precautions. Verify current status with embassy; conditions change fast.
Is there coverage in Timbuktu and Djenné?
Very intermittent. Networks operate where the Malian army and allies maintain presence, but the north has had prolonged outages during military operations. Djenné (center, UNESCO mud mosque) has basic coverage when the situation permits — currently inaccessible to most travelers.
Does an international eSIM help in conflict zones?
The eSIM uses the same local networks (Orange, Malitel) — if operators are down or restricted by authorities, no eSIM will work. For high-risk zones consider satellite comms (Iridium GO! or similar). In Bamako/south the eSIM works normally.
