Airtel Niger, Moov Africa (ex-Atlantique Telecom) and Niger Telecom (state-owned) are the main operators. 4G coverage across Niamey (capital), Maradi, Zinder, Tahoua and Agadez. Airtel has the broadest nationwide coverage. The north (Nigerien Sahara, Aïr and Ténéré) has very limited coverage — Agadez has 4G but trips to Tamgak, Bilma or Djado are largely offline. Niger river and southern agricultural zones (Tillabéri, Dosso) have reasonable village coverage. The political situation remains tense post-2023 (military coup) — check travel advisories before planning. No 5G available. Mixed Type A/B/C/D/E/F plugs, 220V/50Hz.
Fly into Niamey-Diori Hamani (NIM); taxi to center ~15-25 USD. Currency West African CFA franc (XOF), ~625 XOF per USD (fixed peg to euro). Niger is among the world's poorest by indicators but with rich Tuareg/Hausa culture. Niamey, Agadez Mosque (UNESCO), Aïr mountains and Ténéré desert are top destinations — but the north requires military escort due to insecurity. Visa required for nearly all passports; consular network limited. Languages French (official), Hausa, Zarma. Cards barely usable — USD/EUR cash essential.
