Mobile networks in Ecuador

Ecuador has three main carriers: Claro Ecuador (Mexican América Móvil subsidiary, largest market share, 5G in Quito and Guayaquil), Movistar Ecuador (Telefónica subsidiary), and CNT (Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones, state operator, strong in rural zones). The eSIM Ahora connects to the strongest network. Plugs are Type A and B (American format, 110V — same as US and Colombia). Important: Ecuador uses USD as official currency since 2000. 4G coverage reaches Quito, Guayaquil, Cuenca, Manta, Salinas, and most of the Panamerican Highway (E35).

Travel tips for Ecuador

Quito Mariscal Sucre (UIO) and Guayaquil José Joaquín de Olmedo (GYE) airports offer limited free WiFi. The currency is official USD (US bills, US cents and Ecuadorian centavos identical). Banco Pichincha, Banco del Pacífico, and Produbanco ATMs accept foreign cards with no commission up to USD 500. Tips are 10%. Beware altitude in Quito (2,850m) and Cuenca (2,560m) — first 24h adaptation. Uber and Cabify apps work in Quito and Guayaquil. La Mariscal zone in Quito has better tourist security than the historic center at night. Guayaquil has zones to avoid — ask your hotel.

Frequently asked questions about Ecuador eSIM

Does the Ecuador eSIM work in Galápagos (Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal, Isabela)?
Yes in populated zones. Claro and Movistar have 4G coverage in Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz, most touristic), Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (San Cristóbal, Galápagos capital), and Puerto Villamil (Isabela). On uninhabited islands (Bartolomé, Plaza Sur, North Seymour) coverage drops fast — liveaboard cruises have basic WiFi. For yacht visits or land-based tours from main ports coverage follows tourist zones. The Galápagos Entry Fee costs USD 200 (USD 220 since 2024) + USD 20 INGALA transit card.
Does the Ecuador eSIM cover the Amazon (Yasuní, Tena, Coca)?
Limited. Tena, Coca (Puerto Francisco de Orellana), and Misahuallí have Claro/CNT 4G coverage. Once in Amazon lodges (Sani Lodge, Napo Wildlife Center, Sacha) coverage drops to 3G or disappears — lodges usually have satellite WiFi (limited and paid). For deep Yasuní or uncontacted Huaorani tribes communication is exclusively via radio. Jungle tours are usually a mandatory disconnect — good for the soul.
Does the Ecuador eSIM work crossing to Colombia, Peru, or at the Equator monument?
No. Our Ecuador eSIM only works in Ecuadorian territory. Crossing to Colombia (Rumichaca-Ipiales) or Peru (Huaquillas-Aguas Verdes, Macara-La Tina), the eSIM stops working. The Equator line ("Mitad del Mundo", monument 25 min from Quito) is in Ecuadorian territory — the eSIM works there. For Ecuador-Peru-Colombia Andean loops consider one eSIM per country.
