Mobile networks in Panama

Panama has four carriers: +Móvil (Cable & Wireless Panama, formerly Mas Móvil), Claro Panama (Mexican América Móvil subsidiary, 5G in Panama City), Digicel Panama, and Tigo Panama (Millicom, best value). The eSIM Ahora connects to the strongest network. Plugs are Type A and B (American format, 110V — same as the US, no adapter needed). Important: Panama uses USD as official currency (Balboa PAB is coins only, bills are USD). 4G coverage reaches Panama City, Colón, David, Bocas del Toro, Boquete, El Valle de Antón, Pedasí, and most of the Canal and tourist zones.

Travel tips for Panama

Tocumen Airport (PTY, Copa Airlines hub) offers limited free WiFi. The currency is USD (US bills) plus Balboa for coins. Banco General, Banistmo, and BAC Credomatic Panama ATMs accept Visa/Mastercard with no commission up to USD 500. Tips are 10%. Driving on the right. Beware timezone — Panama doesn't observe daylight saving (EST/EDT year-round, aligned with Miami/New York). Uber and Cabify apps work in Panama City. Canal zone and Casco Viejo are safe; other areas vary — ask your hotel.

Frequently asked questions about Panama eSIM

Does the Panama eSIM work at the Canal, Casco Viejo, and tourist excursions?
Yes. +Móvil and Claro have full 4G/5G coverage in Panama City — Casco Viejo (UNESCO), Cinta Costera, Amador Causeway, Panama Viejo. At Canal locks (Miraflores Visitor Center, Gatún Locks, Agua Clara new Neopanamax locks) full coverage. On trans-canal cruises or Gatún Lake navigation coverage extends a few km from shore. For Soberanía National Park (Pipeline Road, birdwatching) coverage in accessible areas.
Does the eSIM cover San Blas (Guna Yala), Bocas del Toro, and island zones?
Bocas del Toro (Isla Colón, Bastimentos, Carenero) has full +Móvil and Digicel 4G coverage in tourist zones. San Blas (autonomous Guna Yala territory) has limited coverage — only islands with major Guna settlements (Carti, El Porvenir). On small paradise islands (Isla Perro, Isla Aguja) coverage drops fast. Bring offline maps if staying in traditional Guna cabins. Boquete and Volcán Barú have full coverage.
Does the Panama eSIM work crossing to Costa Rica or Colombia?
No. Our Panama eSIM only works in Panamanian territory. Crossing to Costa Rica (Paso Canoas/Sixaola), the eSIM stops working. The border with Colombia (Darién Gap, El Real, La Palma) is impassable jungle by land — not a regular tourist route. For Central America-Colombia loops consider flying + per-country eSIM or our regional eSIM. The Darién Stahl Route is extremely dangerous jungle.
