Mobile networks in Libya

Libyana and Madar (al-Madar al-Jadid) are the two main operators, both state-owned. 4G coverage across Tripoli (capital), Benghazi, Misrata, Sabhā and Tobruk. Mediterranean coast (Sabratha, Leptis Magna, Apollonia — all UNESCO Roman ruins) has reasonable coverage. Libyan Sahara (Akakus, Ghadames) has very limited coverage — only main villages. Political split between western government (Tripoli, GNU) and eastern (Benghazi, LNA) can affect connectivity and trigger internet shutdowns. No commercial 5G. Type C/L European/Italian plugs, 230V/50Hz.

Travel tips for Libya

Fly into Tripoli-Mitiga (MJI) — only main operational airport; connections via Tunis, Istanbul, Cairo. Currency Libyan dinar (LYD), volatile ~5 LYD per USD (official market) — but parallel market weaker. Visa required and very difficult — tourism almost nonexistent. Libya has exceptional Roman ruins (Leptis Magna, Sabratha, Cyrene), spectacular Sahara (Akakus, Ghadames UNESCO). But post-Gaddafi security situation remains volatile with active inter-faction conflict. Only suitable for journalists, humanitarians or highly specialized organized tourism with escort. Check advisories urgently.

Frequently asked questions about Libya eSIM

Is tourism possible in Libya in 2025?
Very limited. Most Western governments advise against ALL travel. Political division between GNU (west) and LNA (east) remains active. Some specialized operators offer tightly controlled tours with escort to Leptis Magna or Ghadames. Visa only possible via certified local operator. Not for independent tourism.
Are frequent internet shutdowns common in Libya?
Yes. Government-ordered shutdowns (during exams, political conflicts, protests) are periodic and affect both Libyana and Madar. Recent events and elections often trigger blackouts. An eSIM doesn't bypass country-level shutdowns — for emergencies consider satellite comms.
Do I need to register SIM with passport in Libya?
Yes, local SIMs require registration. An international eSIM skips that paperwork but the roaming partner is Libyana or Madar regardless. Given the security context, maintain regular communication with embassy and a trusted local contact.
