Mobile networks in Mongolia

Mobicom (leader), Unitel and Skytel are the three main operators. Excellent 4G+ across Ulaanbaatar (capital, home to 50% of the population), Erdenet, Darkhan and Choibalsan. Mongolia is the world's least densely populated country and the vast steppe has intermittent coverage — sums (villages) have basic 4G but nomadic pastures and the deep Gobi are without coverage. Tourist temples (Erdene Zuu in Kharkhorin, Gandantegchinlen monastery) covered. Hustai (Przewalski's wild horses), Terelj (national park near UB) covered. Naadam festival (July, Ulaanbaatar and rural) massive coverage in UB. 5G in Ulaanbaatar since 2022. Type C/E European plugs, 220V/50Hz.

Travel tips for Mongolia

Fly into Ulaanbaatar-Chinggis Khaan (UBN); shuttle to center ~10-15 USD (50 km — new 2021 airport). Currency Mongolian tugrik (MNT), volatile ~3,500 MNT per USD; USD/EUR accepted in tourism. Mid-range dinner 8-20 USD, ger camp (yurt) 50-150 USD/night, mid-range hotel 60-150 USD. Classic itinerary: Ulaanbaatar 2-3 days (Sukhbaatar Square, Gandan monastery, Genghis Khan Museum) + Terelj/Hustai (day-trip) + Gobi 5-7 days (Yolyn Am ice gorge, Khongoryn singing dunes, Bayanzag dinosaur fossils) + Kharkhorin (imperial capital). Visa-free for many passports 30-90 days. Mongolian language (Cyrillic) + English in youth urban tourism.

Frequently asked questions about Mongolia eSIM

Is there coverage in the Gobi desert?
Limited. Gobi sums (villages) like Dalanzadgad (Ömnögovi province capital) have 4G. Tourist ger camps (Three Camel Lodge, Gobi Erdene) have limited Wi-Fi. Khongoryn dunes, Yolyn Am, Bayanzag (Flaming Cliffs — dinosaur site) are without coverage — days offline during Gobi 4x4 trips. Bring offline GPS.
Does the eSIM work with nomadic families on the steppe?
Limited. Mongolian nomadic families live in gers (yurts) on remote pastures without coverage. When staying with a nomadic family (unforgettable experience, arrangeable through agencies) you're generally offline 1-2 nights. Some nearby villages accessible by motorbike have basic coverage. Your guide typically has radio or satellite phone for emergencies.
Is there 5G in Ulaanbaatar?
Yes. Mobicom and Unitel launched 5G in Ulaanbaatar from 2022 — Central Asia's first by some KPIs. Wide 5G coverage in central UB (Sukhbaatar Square, Sansar, Khoroolol-1), airport. Typical 5G speeds 200-500 Mbps. Rest of country mostly 4G+. Mongolia has surprisingly advanced urban telecom infrastructure.
