Mobile networks in French Polynesia

Vini (historical operator, part of OPT) and Vodafone Polynesia are the main operators. 4G+ coverage across Papeete, all of Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Raiatea and Rangiroa. More remote islands (Tuamotus, Marquesas, Australs) have varied coverage — touristed atolls (Tikehau, Fakarava, Nuku Hiva) well covered, uninhabited atolls offline. Bora Bora overwater bungalow resorts have coverage from the atoll's coastal network. French Polynesia is NOT in the EU roam-like-at-home zone despite being French territory — always expensive roaming on EU plans. Type C/E/F French plugs, 220V/50Hz.

Frequently asked questions about French Polynesia eSIM

Does my EU French plan work in French Polynesia?
Generally NO without extra fees. Although French Polynesia is French territory (collectivité d'outre-mer), it's outside the EU roam-like-at-home zone because it's outside geographic EU. Your Free, Orange or Bouygues plan will hit expensive international roaming. A local eSIM is strongly recommended.
Is there coverage in Bora Bora overwater bungalows?
Yes, overwater resorts on Bora Bora, Moorea and Tahaa are within 4G range of Vini or Vodafone (signal from atoll coastal towers). Speeds can be modest (15-50 Mbps) but plenty for WhatsApp, photos and maps. Resort Wi-Fi is usually available as backup.
Does the eSIM work on inter-island cruises (Paul Gauguin, Aranui)?
In port at any inhabited island it works. Between islands or in open sea the ship uses its own maritime satellite network — eSIM doesn't work and maritime roaming is extremely expensive (10-20 USD/MB). Keep data off during sailing.
