Mobile networks in Uganda

MTN Uganda (leader) and Airtel Uganda are the two dominant operators. 4G+ across Kampala (capital), Entebbe (airport), Jinja (Nile source), Mbarara, Gulu and Mbale. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park (mountain gorillas — more habituated families than Rwanda) has 4G at main lodges (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo); gorilla treks may have weak signal in the forested interior. Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth NP, Kidepo: coverage at lodges and tourist zones. Nile river (Jinja) well covered. 5G in Kampala since 2024. Type G British plugs, 240V/50Hz.

Travel tips for Uganda

Fly into Entebbe (EBB); shuttle/taxi to Kampala (40 km) ~25-40 USD. Currency Ugandan shilling (UGX), ~3,700 UGX per USD; USD accepted in tourism. Mid-range dinner 6-18 USD, gorilla lodge 100-500 USD/night, safari lodge 80-400 USD. Uganda gorilla permits 800 USD (cheaper than Rwanda 1,500 USD). Top itinerary: Bwindi (gorillas 2-3 nights) + Queen Elizabeth (tree lions, Kyambura chimps) + Murchison (falls, hippos) + Jinja (Nile rafting). e-Visa online 50 USD. English official and Luganda very common. Uganda is tourism-safe away from DRC/South Sudan borders.

Frequently asked questions about Uganda eSIM

Is there coverage tracking gorillas in Bwindi?
Yes at lodges and trekking start zones (Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo). Once inside Bwindi forest (gorillas live at 1,500-2,300 m), signal varies — families relatively close to entrances have intermittent coverage; deeper families may be offline. MTN typically has better mountain coverage than Airtel. Enough for post-trek sharing.
Does the eSIM work for White Nile rafting in Jinja?
Yes. Jinja (3h east of Kampala) has steady 4G. The Nile source and rafting camps (Adrift, Nile River Explorers) well covered. Some class V rapids were lost to the Bujagali dam in 2012, but rapids remain. Useful for booking tours and sharing clips.
Does a Uganda eSIM also work in Rwanda for gorillas?
Not directly. East African Community has agreements but typically don't include Rwanda in Ugandan plans. For a Uganda Bwindi + Rwanda Volcanoes circuit, consider a regional 'East Africa' eSIM covering both. Doing both countries in one trip (Kyanika border crossing) is popular.
