Mobile networks in Kenya

Safaricom (dominant leader with ~65% market share) and Airtel Kenya are the main operators. Excellent 4G+ across Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret. 5G rollout since 2022 across Nairobi and Mombasa with continued expansion. Safaris in Maasai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo and Samburu have reasonable coverage at lodges and main tourist zones — deep reserve interiors have intermittent signal. Swahili coast (Diani, Malindi, Lamu) well covered. Mount Kenya and Kilimanjaro climb (Tanzanian side) have signal at bases and weak at summits. Note: Safaricom's M-Pesa is essential for Kenyan payments — but requires a local SIM with registration. Type G British plugs, 240V/50Hz.

Frequently asked questions about Kenya eSIM

Can an international eSIM be used for M-Pesa?
Not directly. M-Pesa (Kenya's dominant mobile money system) is tied to local Safaricom or Airtel Kenya SIM numbers with biometric registration. An international eSIM gives you data for apps and maps but not M-Pesa. Visitors typically combine: eSIM for data + USD/KES cash + Visa cards for big payments.
Is there coverage on Maasai Mara and Amboseli safaris?
Yes at lodges and main tourist zones (Safaricom and Airtel). Mara Triangle, Talek Gate and main lodges have 4G. Game drives in the deep reserve interior have intermittent signal. Amboseli generally has better coverage than Mara. Ideal for partial unplugging during drives.
Is there 5G in Nairobi?
Yes. Safaricom launched commercial 5G in Nairobi in 2022, expanding to Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret. Reasonable urban coverage in central zones. Typical 5G speeds 200-500 Mbps. Airtel has also deployed 5G in Nairobi since 2024.
