If you're planning to travel with an eSIM but aren't sure whether your phone is compatible, this guide shows you how to verify it in less than 2 minutes. Most smartphones launched since 2020 support eSIM, but important exceptions exist by region and model.

What is an eSIM and why compatibility varies

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a chip soldered to your phone's motherboard that stores downloadable carrier profiles. Unlike physical SIM cards, you don't need a tray or have to swap plastic when traveling. You download the profile via QR code or app, and in 30 seconds you're connected.

Compatibility depends on three factors:

1. Hardware: the manufacturer must include the eUICC chip in the model.
2. Software: the operating system (iOS, Android) must support eSIM management.
3. Carrier lock: some carriers (AT&T, Verizon in the US; Movistar in some Latin American countries) sell locked models that won't activate eSIM until you unlock the device.

Method 1: Dialing code (Android and iPhone)

Dial *#06# in your phone app. If an EID appears (32 digits starting with 89 or similar), your device has an eSIM chip. The EID is the unique identifier of the eUICC chip.

• iPhone: you'll see "EID" listed next to the IMEI.
• Android: depending on the manufacturer, it may appear as "EID" or "eUICC Identifier".

If you only see IMEI with no EID, your model doesn't support eSIM.

Method 2: Operating system settings

iPhone (iOS 12.1+):

1. Go to Settings > General > About.
2. Scroll down to find EID. If present, the hardware is compatible.
3. Then go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan (or Cellular Data > Add eSIM in iOS 17+). If this option exists, the model supports eSIM.

Android (version 9+):

1. Go to Settings > About phone > Status (or SIM information).
2. Look for EID. The exact location varies: on Samsung it's under Status > IMEI information, on Google Pixel under About phone > SIM information.
3. If you can't find EID in settings, download the eSIM Info app (available on Google Play) — it scans your system and confirms whether an eUICC chip is present.

Search for your model on the manufacturer's website. Examples:

• Apple: the technical specifications page lists all models with eSIM. From iPhone XS/XR (2018) forward, all models support eSIM. iPhone 14 and 15 sold in the US no longer have a physical slot — eSIM only.
• Samsung: Galaxy S20 and later (S20, S21, S22, S23, S24), Note 20, Z Fold2+, Z Flip+. The A series doesn't always include eSIM — verify the exact model (A54 5G does; A53 doesn't in all regions).
• Google Pixel: from Pixel 3 (2018) all models have eSIM. Pixel 7 and 8 support up to 4 active profiles simultaneously.

Important regional exceptions

Carrier-locked models

In the US, many iPhones and Samsung Galaxy phones sold by AT&T, Verizon, or T-Mobile come locked. The lock doesn't prevent eSIM use if the carrier has already unlocked the device. To travel with a third-party eSIM:

1. Request unlocking from your carrier (typical requirements: contract fulfilled, device paid off).
2. Once unlocked, restart your phone.
3. Verify with *#06# that the EID still shows — some carriers disable eSIM until unlock.

China vs Global variants

Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Realme manufacture two versions of the same model:

• China version (CN): no eSIM, because China prohibits eSIM in consumer devices (regulatory policy 2020-2026).
• Global version: eSIM enabled.

If you bought a Xiaomi 14 on AliExpress or from an import retailer, verify the ROM. The Chinese ROM doesn't activate eSIM profiles, even if you install the global ROM afterward — the eUICC chip isn't soldered in those models.

The same applies to models sold in Japan by carriers like NTT DoCoMo or au — many come with eSIM disabled until you unlock the device. If you're traveling to Japan, confirm your phone is unlocked before purchasing an eSIM.

Dual SIM: eSIM + physical SIM simultaneously

Most eSIM-compatible smartphones allow you to use eSIM + physical SIM at the same time (dual standby mode). Typical setup for travelers:

• Physical SIM: your local number (WhatsApp, banks, authentication).
• Travel eSIM: mobile data (maps, social media, email).

On iOS, go to Settings > Cellular and choose "Mobile Data" for the eSIM and "Primary Line" for calls on the physical SIM. On Android, go to Settings > Network & internet > SIM cards and assign the eSIM to "Mobile Data" and the physical SIM to "Calls".

Profile limit: iPhones from the 13 onward store up to 8 eSIM profiles, but only 2 active simultaneously (1 eSIM + 1 physical, or 2 eSIM without physical). Google Pixel 7/8 supports up to 4 active profiles. Samsung limits to 1 active eSIM + 1 physical SIM.

How to activate eSIM after verifying compatibility

1. Purchase the profile: at eSIM Ahora select your destination country. Example: Argentina covers Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Córdoba with Personal/Claro; Brazil uses Claro/TIM/Vivo.

3. Scan the QR: on iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan > Use QR Code. On Android, Settings > Network & internet > SIM cards > Add eSIM (some Samsung models use Connections > SIM card manager).
4. Enable data: turn on "Data roaming" for the eSIM. This does NOT generate extra charges — the eSIM already includes prepaid data.
5. Verify connection: open your browser or an app. If it doesn't connect in 60 seconds, restart your phone.

Common compatibility issues

EID disappears after iOS/Android update

Some users report that the EID vanishes from Settings > General > About after a major update (example: iOS 16 → 17). Solution:

1. Restart the device.
2. Go to Settings > Cellular > Add Cellular Plan. If the option exists, the chip still works even if the EID doesn't show.
3. If the option doesn't appear, restore from backup — in rare cases, the update corrupts the eSIM configuration profile.

On Android, the EID location changed in Android 13+ (Google moved it from Status to SIM information). Use the eSIM Info app if you can't find it in settings.

Phone compatible but won't accept QR

Possible causes:

• Carrier lock not lifted: check with your operator.
• Corrupted previous profile: if you installed an eSIM before and deleted it improperly, residue may remain. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This deletes saved WiFi and eSIM profiles — have the QR ready to reinstall.
• Device region: some Xiaomi phones bought in India won't activate eSIM if the ROM detects you're outside India. Change system region to "Global" in developer settings (requires bootloader unlock).

eSIM works but no data

Verify:

1. Roaming enabled: must be ON for the eSIM line.
2. Correct APN: auto-configures in most cases. If it doesn't connect, the provider can email the manual APN if the profile doesn't come preloaded.
3. Network coverage: in rural areas, local networks may lack 4G coverage. Manually switch to 3G/2G in network settings.

Differences between 5G and 4G on eSIM

Some countries offer 5G eSIM plans (example: US with T-Mobile, South Korea with SK Telecom). Your phone must meet TWO requirements to use 5G:

1. Compatible 5G chip: iPhone 12 onward, Samsung S20+, Google Pixel 5+.
2. 5G bands in destination country: carriers use different bands (n77, n78, n79 in Europe and Asia; n260, n261 in the US). If your phone doesn't support those bands, it'll connect to 4G even if the plan allows 5G.

eSIM on tablets and smartwatches

iPad

All iPads with cellular connectivity since 2018 support eSIM (iPad Pro 11" and 12.9" from 2018+, iPad Air 2019+, iPad 2019+, iPad mini 2019+). Useful if you work remotely and need independent connectivity from your phone.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch Series 3 GPS+Cellular and later have eSIM, but it works ONLY as an iPhone extension — you can't install a standalone travel eSIM. The watch shares your iPhone's number (NumberSync technology in the US, One Number in Europe). If you travel with Apple Watch and want it to work without your phone nearby, your local carrier must support roaming for the watch — few do outside the US and Western Europe.

Samsung Galaxy Watch

Galaxy Watch4, Watch5, Watch6 (LTE models) have a standalone eSIM — you can install a data profile and use it without a smartphone. However, activation requires the Galaxy Wearable app, which only recognizes carrier-certified profiles. Travel eSIMs (including eSIM Ahora) often don't appear in the app's list — you'd have to install the QR manually via watch settings, a process Samsung doesn't publicly document.

How do I know if my iPhone has eSIM without opening settings?

Dial *#06# in your phone app. If an EID of 32 digits appears next to the IMEI, your iPhone has an eSIM chip. This method works on all models from XS/XR forward.

Do mid-range Android phones support eSIM?

It depends on the manufacturer and launch year. Samsung Galaxy A54 5G does; A53, A33, A23 don't (in most regions). Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro+ has eSIM in the global version, but Redmi Note 11 doesn't. The only reliable way to check is to dial *#06# and look for the EID — if it doesn't appear, that model has no eSIM chip.

Can I use eSIM if I bought my phone from a carrier and still have a contract?

Yes, as long as the device is unlocked. In the US, AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile lock devices until you fulfill your contract or pay in full — then you request an unlock (free by law).
