Unitel (Lao-Vietnamese military JV), Lao Telecom and Beeline (ETL) are the main operators. Steady 4G coverage across Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng, Pakse and Savannakhet. Unitel generally has the best nationwide coverage. The fast train Vientiane-Boten (LCR, connecting to China) has good coverage. Rural northern zones (Phongsali, Sam Neua) have more limited coverage — ethnic mountain villages can be off-grid. The 4000 Islands (Si Phan Don, southern Mekong) have 4G on Don Det and Don Khon but weak on small islets. Bolaven Plateau: good coverage on main roads. Mixed Type A/B/C/F plugs, 230V/50Hz.
Fly into Vientiane (VTE) or Luang Prabang (LPQ); tuk-tuk to center ~5-7 USD. Currency Lao kip (LAK), volatile ~21,000 LAK per USD. Laos is cheap: dinner 3-8 USD, guesthouse 10-25 USD. Luang Prabang (UNESCO) is the gem — temples, market lunches, dawn monk alms procession, Kuang Si waterfalls. Vientiane is a relaxed 1-2 day base. Vang Vieng has shifted from party to adventure (kayaking, caves, hot air balloon). Southern Si Phan Don is hammock-and-book paradise. Fast train Vientiane-Luang Prabang 2h, comfortable. Visa on arrival 30-40 USD for many passports.
