Mobile networks in Pakistan

Jazz (Mobilink), Zong (Chinese CMPak operator), Telenor Pakistan and Ufone are the four main operators. 4G coverage across Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Multan and Faisalabad. Jazz has the largest network; Zong typically leads urban 4G speeds. 5G is not yet commercial (2024-2025 pilots). Coverage on the KKH (Karakoram Highway) toward Gilgit and Hunza is reasonable in main villages but weak in between. Tribal areas and border zones may have network restrictions for national security. Important: Pakistan requires biometric NIC/passport registration for local SIMs — international eSIMs skip that friction. Mixed Type C/D/G plugs, 230V/50Hz.

Travel tips for Pakistan

Fly into Karachi (KHI), Lahore (LHE) or Islamabad (ISB). Currency Pakistani rupee (PKR), ~280 PKR per USD. Dinner 3-8 USD, mid-range hotel 40-80 USD. Lahore (Mughal, Badshahi, Wagah border) is a top cultural 3-4 day base. Islamabad/Rawalpindi gives access to northern mountains (Hunza, Skardu, K2). Karachi is a chaotic mega-city. Aggressive driving — use Careem (local Uber) in cities. e-Visa for many passports. Northern areas (Gilgit-Baltistan, Hunza) are spectacular and safer than perception suggests. Check advisories for Balochistan and Afghan border zones.

Frequently asked questions about Pakistan eSIM

Do I need biometric registration to use an eSIM in Pakistan?
Not for international eSIMs. PTA regulations require biometric registration (fingerprints + NIC/passport) only for physical local SIMs from Pakistani carriers. An international travel eSIM bypasses that process entirely — a big time-and-privacy advantage for tourists.
Is there coverage on the KKH toward Hunza and K2?
Main towns (Gilgit, Karimabad, Sost, Skardu) have 4G from Zong and Jazz. The road between towns has intermittent coverage. Concordia/K2 base camp is completely offline (several days off-grid trekking). Hunza has hotel Wi-Fi.
Is there commercial 5G in Pakistan?
No in 2025. PTA has authorized 5G pilots in Islamabad and Karachi but commercial rollout is pending spectrum auction. The 4G network (especially Zong) delivers 30-80 Mbps in cities — more than enough for tourist use.
